John Barber was the son of Thomas and Joan Barber and the husband of Bathsheba Coggin. He served in King Philip's War and participated in Turner's Falls Fight under Capt. William Turner.
John lived in Windsor on the original homestead, which was left to him by his father. When he moved his family to Springfield MA in 1671 the Windsor home was transferred to his brother Samuel. John lived in Springfield from 1671 to 1684, during which time he served as Deacon in Christ Church in Springfield, and also as one of the Springfield Selectmen.
The year 1684 found the restless John and his family in Suffield CT, where he remained for a time, after which he returned to finish his days in Springfield.

"John Barber, Sr., son of Thomas of Windsor, and brother of Thomas of Suffield, born 1642, removed to Springfield 1671, to Suffield 1684, was freeman 1681. He was a deacon, also one of the first Selectmen chosen. Married Bathsheba Coggin of Springfield, 1665, and reared a family of children before his removal to Suffield. He died May 14, 1712. This surname soon after disappears from Suffield records."
John and his sister Sarah received distribution of their father Thomas Barber's estate on 6 June, 1662.
"In 1664 his father's place in Windsor was made over to him, which (1671) he transferred to his brother Samuel and removed to Springfield; then (1684) to Suffield, where he was a deacon, also one of the first selectmen; will made 4 Feb. 1711/12, Sheldon says he d. 14 May, 1712, and that this surname soon after disappears from Suffield. Ch. b. at W. (Old Ch. Rec.)"

John Barber is listed as one of the original proprietors of Suffield, with land grants from the committee. He received 14 Sep 1674 fifty acres on Feather Street, and in 1680 sixty acres on Springfield Road. The same work gives him on the list drafted 9 Mar 1682 of "ye Names of ye Inhabitants of Suffield" and he was chosen Select man on that date. On 6 Apr 1685 John Barber Senr. was "chosen with Ensigne George Norton to treat with ye Major Phychon in order to ye procuring a Deed of sale of ye Towneship, yt we purchased of him."
