About John Barrows, Sr.

A Partial Biography of John Barrows is found at http://virts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nvjack/ancestors/b10572.htm

It contains the following items:

• The date of his marriage to Anne Thompson (31 Aug 1634 in England)

• Information on their immigration to Boston:

"John and Anne boarded and sailed from Ipswitch, England, May 10(16) 1637 on the Mary Ann of Yarmouth -- Wm. Goose, Master -- landed at Boston 6/20/1637. Within the year, John was granted 15.5 acres of land in Salem. (Once called Naumkaeg). According to the Maine Historical and Genealogical record, they came on the Plaine Jane to Virginia in 1635. He was 26 and his wife Ann was 38. They then went west to Salem in 1637 in the Mary Ann with William Goose, the master. In the genealogy of New England, Vol. IV, pg 2023, it says that he sailed from the port of Yarmouth on May 10, 1637 or soon afterward, having taken the examination on that date to go to New England, stating his age as twenty eight and his wife, Anne, as forty.

"In the Rolls Office, Chauncery Lane, London, a large volume bound in vellum contains the name of some of the early emigrants to this country. Under the date of May 15, 1635 there is an entry for Jno Barrowe, age 26 years, embarked in the Plaine Joan (master Richard Buckman) with others for Virginia --"the p'ties having bro't attestacion of their conformaities to orders and displine of the Church of England. "Again 5/10/1637 is recorded in the "examination of John Barrowe of Yarmouth, cooper, aged 28 years, and Anne, his wife, aged 40 years, desirous to pass to Salem in New England, ther to inhibit." The historians say they probably came to America on the Mary Ann. We infer from this record that John came to this country 1635, returned to England for his wife."

• his will, the inventory of his estate at Monponset (Plympton) including 30 acres.

Notice that he died on 14 Feb (or possibly 18 Feb) of 1691 on the Julian Calendar and 1692 on the Gregorian Calendar.

Research notes

Cutter says about John Barrows and his family:

"The name, whether spelled variously Barrows, Barrus, Barrowe or Barrow, from Barrow, a mound, or borough, a town, is of the family that lived in Yarmouth, England, before 1637. Out of the family was sent to New England in 1637 the immigrant ancestor of the name of Barrus or Barrows in America. in the person of John Barrows.
"John Barrows was born in England in 1609, and he left Yarmouth, England, at the age of twenty-eight, with his wife Anne, and settled in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. John and Anne Barrows received grants of land in Salem in 1637, and were inhabitants of that town for twenty-eight years, and all their children were born there. They removed to Plymouth before 1665, and John, the immigrant, died there in 1692. His will shows that he left a second wife younger than himself, and four sons: Robert, Joshua, Benjamin, who lived in Attleboro; and Ebenezer, who lived in Cumberland, Rhode Island; also two daughters (unnamed in his will, possibly:) Mary and Deborah."[16]

Notes

Corrected birthdate of John Barrows (born 1609; Yarmouth, England).[17]

The following notes seem to refer to a John Barrows who lived in Virginia and should probably be deleted or moved to the appropriate person:

From an online report by Hugh Will Barrow, Sr., "Who are Thomas Barrow?"[18]

Colonial Militiaman 1651-1652
Sailed to America on the "Plain Joan" departing from Gravesend, Engalnd for Virginia on May 15, 1635 at the age of 26.
He was the headright of John Sweete of the Isle of Wight who patented 650 acres of land adjacent to Mr. Cooper and Francis England November 11, 1642 for transportation of 13 persons.
As ealy as 1650, John was mentioned as living in James City County when Surry County was created from all lands on the south side of the James River.Mat 3, 1635, patented 385 acres of land in Surry County "on the south side of Upper Chipoake Creeke, south side of the James River, bordered by George Burcher's marked trees."
In 1656, Captain Merriwether assigns 600 acres of land to John Barrow, evidently for his militia service.

John Barrowe, son of Ralf and and Audrey Deye Borrowe, was born 9/16/1609 in Great Yarmouth, England. He married Anne Thompson, daughter of Anthony and Margaret Thompson of Great Yarmouth, England, on 8/31/1634. Anne was christened 9/24/1598. According to the Maine Historical and Geneology Recorder and according to Ship Passenger Lists and the Rolls Office in London, John Borrowe, aged 26, sailed for Virginia 5/15/1635 on the Plain Joan, R. Buchman, Master. If this is the same John Barrowe, he might have returned to England for his wife Anne.

It is believed that John and Anne Barrowe sailed from London, England and according to the following record shows” the examination of John Borrowe of Yarmouth, a Cooper, aged 28 years and Anne, his wife, aged 40 years-desirous to pass to Salem in New England, there to inhabit”.

John and Anne sailed to Salem, Ma., probably on the ship Mary Ann, William Goose, Master, on 6/20/1637. John was 28 years old and Anne 40 years old at this time. John was given a land grant of 15 acres in Salem, Ma., once known as Naumkaug.( the Salem records dated 8/14/1637 state “Jno. Barows is received an inhabitant of Salem and is allowed 5 acres of land”. He was allowed another 10 acres at the Town Meeting of 11/8/1637 and at a meeting 6/30/1640 he was allotted an additional 2 acres) There, their son Robert was born on 5/11/1639. It is believed that Robert was the only living child of John and Anne Barrowe. There are Church records showing the birth of a daughter named Dionys, born in Great Yarmouth, England, but she died shortly after birth. Anne Thompson Barrowe died in Salem, Ma. sometime prior to 1667.

John married a 2nd time, to a much younger woman, abt 1667. He married Deborah Doten/Doty [SIC], who was born abt 1650. John and his 2nd wife lived in Plymouth, Ma. There are records showing that on 3/6/1666 John was fined 10 shillings in Plymouth because of his refusal to give evidence in connection with the Grand Inquest. The Treasury Accounts for 6/8/1666 shows under the category “Debts due by fines and otherwise to the country--John Barrow, 00:10:00”. (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, Plymouth County Records, Pg.116) The list of Plymouth townsmen dated 2/15/1668 included John and a 6/16/1668 list of those entitled to vote included John Barow and Robert Barrows. John was granted land there and on June 15, 1674 a grant of land to him was excepted with certain rules. On April 9, 1684, at South Meadows, 10 upland acres were laid out to John, next to his meadow land on the northwest side of the river. On November 24, 1684 he was granted 30 acres of land. John and Deborah had five children.

Biography

John Barrows was born say 1616 and died in Plymouth on 14 February 1691/2. [1] Baptism 17 September 1609 in Great Yarmouth, son of Ralphe and Audery. All the baptism entries give both parent's given names. [2]

John married first an unidentified woman with whom he had one son, Robert.

John married second in Plymouth, about 1665, [3] Deborah Pratt, daughter of Joshua and Bathsheba (_____) Pratt. She was born about 1642 and died in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, on 1 April 1720. [4] Deborah married second in Plymouth on 17 October 1693, Joseph Buckland, [5] son of William(1) and Mary (Bosworth) Buckland. [6] Joseph was born about 1634, and died in Rehoboth on 28 March 1718. [7] He had married first in Rehoboth on 5 November 1659, Deborah Allen, [8] daughter of John(2) [George(1)] and Christian (_____) Allen of Swansea, Massachusetts. [9] She was buried in Rehoboth on 27 November 1690. [10]

The first record of John Barrows was on March 1665/6 in Plymouth court records. He bought land in Plymouth on 25 December 1668, and was mentioned many times in Plymouth town records. He left a Will dated 12 Januaey 1691/2, presented 6 April 1692, mentioning eldest son Robert; son Joshua; sons Benajah and Ebenezer (both under age); two daughters (unnamed); and wife Deborah Barrows.[11]

Child of John and _____ (_____) Barrows:

1. Robert Barrows, b. about 1641; m. (1) Ruth Bonham; (2) Lydia Dunham.

Children of John and Deborah (Pratt?) Barrows, all born presumably in Plymouth:

2. Deborah Barrows, b. ca. 1666 [based on her date of marriage], m. Plymouth 20 December 1687 to Nathan Fish,[12] b. say 1660, probably son of Nathaniel (1) Fish.[13]Deborah is included as a daughter of John based on her name, age, and marriage in Plymouth. They lived in Falmouth, Massachusetts[14]

3. Joshua Barrows, b. ca. 1670; d. Attleborough, Massachusetts, between 30 December 1747, date of his Will, and probate 4 April 1749; m. 1. Mary Chamberlain 1696; m. 2. Deliverance Wedge by 1723

4. Daughter, b. about 1676. Some authors have identified this second daughter as Mary who, as Mary Burrows, m. 1698 at Duxbury to John Wormall. [NEHGR disputes further in the article]

5. Benajah Barrows, b. ca. 1683; d. Attleborough, Massachusetts 5 January 1754 in his 71st year; m. 1. Lydia Buckland 1706 (his step-sister); m. 2. Elizabeth Lincoln 1726; m. 3. Hannah Bennett 1736.

6. Ebenezer Barrows, baptized in Plymouth 29 March 1685 as son of Deborah Barrow; d. Cumberland, Rhode Island after 22 January 1745/6; m. bef 1712 to Elizabeth Lyon.

Death and Legacy

John Barrow died 12 March 1692, and his Will was proved before William Bradford, Esq., Deputy Governor of Plymouth Colony, and Ephraim Morton, Assistant, on 6 April 1692. [15]

The Will of John Barrow[11] Executed 12 January 1691-92, and on record in Plymouth, names his eldest son Robert, and other sons Benajah, Joshua and Ebenezer not then of age, and mentions two (unnamed) daughters and his loving wife whom he appoints sole Administratrix of the Will. He signs the Will with an S mark, and it is witnessed by John Gray and the T mark of John Barrows, the eldest son of his son Robert, who was at that time twenty-four years of age. The children of John, the immigrant, and Deborah Barrow, named in his Will, were likely in the following order:

Robert.
Joshua, who married Deliverance Wedge, and died about 1750.
Benajah, born 1683, married (first) Lydia Buckler; (second) Elizabeth Lincoln; ( third) Hannah Bennett.
Ebenezer, married Elizabeth Lynn.
His two daughters were :

Deborah, who married Archippus Fulton, of Plympton, December 20, 1687, and had children.
Mary, who married John Wormall, of Duxbury, January, 1698, and removed to Bridgewater, and had five children.
Research Notes

Cutter says about John Barrows and his family:

"The surname, whether spelled variously Barrows, Barrus, Barrowe or Barrow, from Barrow, a mound, or borough, a town, is of the family that lived in Yarmouth, England, before 1637. Out of the family was sent to New England in 1637, the immigrant ancestor of the name of Barrus or Barrows in America. in the person of John Barrows.
"John Barrows was born in England in 1609, and he left Yarmouth, England at the age of twenty-eight with his wife Anne, and settled in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. John and Anne Barrows received grants of land in Salem in 1637, and were inhabitants of that town for twenty-eight years and all their children were born there. They removed to Plymouth before 1665, and John, the immigrant, died there in 1692. His Will shows that he left a second wife younger than himself, and four sons: Robert, Joshua, Benjamin who lived in Attleboro; and Ebenezer who lived in Cumberland, Rhode Island; also two daughters (unnamed in his Will, possibly:) Mary and Deborah."[16]
Notes

Corrected birthdate of John Barrows (born 1609; Yarmouth, England).[17]

The following notes seem to refer to a John Barrows who lived in Virginia and should probably be deleted or moved to the appropriate person:

From an online report by Hugh Will Barrow, Sr., "Who are Thomas Barrow ?"[18]

Colonial Militiaman 1651-1652
Sailed to America on the ship Plain Joan departing from Gravesend, England for Virginia on 15 May 1635 at the age of 26.
He was the headright of John Sweete of the Isle of Wight who patented 650 acres of land adjacent to Mr. Cooper and Francis England, 11 November 1642 for transportation of 13 persons.
As early as 1650, John was mentioned as living in James City County when Surry County was created from all lands on the south side of the James River. 3 May 1635, patented 385 acres of land in Surry County "on the south side of Upper Chipoake Creeke, south side of the James River, bordered by George Burcher's marked trees."
In 1656, Captain Merriwether assigns 600 acres of land to John Barrow, evidently for his militia service.
