John Barnabus Baxley, Sr

There is a great deal of uncertainty regarding his birth. He was most likely born in Bladen, North Carolina. His father was either born in England, or North Carolina, but either way, he would have been in North Carolina before John's birth.

(There was a John Baxley christened in Little Wigborough, England 2/6/1743, but his parents were Henry and Elizabeth. He married Mary Clark on November 15, 1768 in Wigborough, England).

There are multiple trees on Family Search and some trees have him born in England and some trees have him born in North Carolina. His DAR record (below) does not have a location listed. I couldn't find any records that listed his birth location.

However, Stephen MacDonogh, 'Barack Obama: the road from Moneygall' (Dingle: Brandon, 2010), p. 25, gives John's birth location as Bowes, Yorkshire: "John Baxley, a miller born in 1743 in Bowes, Yorkshire, England, recognised the significance of the fast-flowing streams of the [Baltimore] area and purchased land at sites well suited for milling." MacDonogh does not give precise references for most facts, but coincides with other sources where checkable. From his acknowledgements, his most likely source is a website of Roger Kearney of Troy, Ohio: www.onthesquare.com/kearney, that no longer works, as of February 2022.
