John was the son of Jonathon Benfield and Lavina Price.
The funeral of John Benfield, well known citizen, contractor and builder, of this town, took place on Wednesday of the last week, his death resulting from a fall from a scaffold the Friday before, the whole community greatly shocked by it. All the children were present except Watt, who reached home a few hours after the funeral which was in the Baptist Church conducted by Rev. M. A. Adams, the pastor, assisted by Rev. W. R. Savage of the Episcopal church, a large number of friends and relatives present, the burial in the Reformed Church cemetery. Mr. Benfield was a man of much intelligence, was well liked as citizen, friend and neighbor and will be greatly missed by the community.
