About Colonel John Bolling, of Chestnut Grove

John Bolling was the son of John Kennon Bolling and second wife Elizabeth Blair. He was born June 24. 1737 at Cobbs Plantation, Henrico County, Virginia. He lived for some time in Gloucester County, but then settled in Chesterfield County, on a plantation he named Chestnut Grove. He died at Chestnut Grove, Chesterfield County, Virginia, c.1800 (some sources say as late as 1822). Some sources list a middle name of William, others list Blair, however no primary evidence of either name, so both names are listed in the "also known as" field. He served as a Burgess 1766-1769 for Gloucester County. In 1778 he served in the House of Delegates for Chesterfield County.

He married Mary Jefferson on June 29, 1760 and had seven children. Mary Jefferson was the daughter of Peter Jefferson and wife Jane Randolph, and the sister of Thomas Jefferson. She was born October 1, 1741 at Shadwell, Goochland County, Virginia, and died in 1817.

Biography

Col. John Blair Bolling

Find A Grave Memorial ID # 194297416

John was born in 1737. He is the son of John Bolling and Elizabeth Blair. He married Mary Jefferson, the sister of the future United States President, and the parents of Archibald Bolling, John Bolling, Martha Jefferson Bolling (Archer), Edward Bolling, Mary Jefferson 'Polly' Archer (Bolling), Robert Bolling, Thomas Bolling, Ann Bolling, Jane Bolling and an unnamed son that died as an infant. [1]

John and Mary Bolling were ancestors of United States First Lady, Edith Bolling Wilson.

John's brother Robert wrote of him in 1764: [2]

John Bolling possessed some of his father's dispositions: was like him, very large, and was six feet high. He delighted for the chase, and cared very little for the ladies, until he saw his lady. His character then as suddenly changed as that of Silvio in the Pastor Fido. After many sighs &c., he married Miss Jefferson, daughter of that Jefferson who, with Mr. Fry, made a map of Virginia.

But it seems he had already developed an attachment to the bottle.[3] Robertson attempts a whitewash.[4] But Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1798:[5]

The state of things at Chesnut Grove is truly distressing. Mr B.'s habitual intoxication will destroy himself, his fortune & family. Of all calamities this is the greatest. I wish my sister could bear his misconduct with more patience. It might lessen his attachment to the bottle, & at any rate would make her own time more tolerable.
