Mary Bolling (Jefferson), also known as Polly, was the daughter of Peter Jefferson and wife Jane Randolph, and the sister of Thomas Jefferson. She was born October 1, 1741 at Shadwell, Goochland County, Virginia, and died in 1817.

She married John Bolling, on June 29, 1760 and had seven children. John was the son of John Kennon Bolling and second wife Elizabeth Blair.

She did NOT marry Thomas Turpin, Jr. THAT Mary Jefferson was her aunt, and the daughter of Thomas Jefferson of Osbourne and wife Virginia Mary Field.

8. Thomas* Bolling, of Cobbs, was bom July 7, 1735, and diedAug. 7, 1804; married Elizabeth, daughter of her William Gay. Thomas Boiling, was, it is believed, educated at William and Mary College, and studied law in Williamsburg under R. C. Nicholas; but never practiced. At his mothers death (his brother Edward having died unmarried) he inherited Cobbs, and the other estates in which she hada life interest. He was a Justice of Chesterfield; a member of the Committee of Safety of that Cotmty 1774-76 (Wm. Mary Quarterly,V, 102) and during the Revolution was a Major in the Chesterfield militia. Heappears to have been for a short time in active service in 1775, as in the Militia Book in the State Library is an entry imder date Nov. 5, 1775:Pay and rations to Thomas Boiling, Major Chesterfield militia, per acct. £66.8. In the Chesterfield County Order Book for July 1777 isa record that Thomas Boiling qualified (by taking the oath) as Major of militia.

  • 9. John* Bolling, bom June 24. 1737, died 179-; married June 29,1760, Mary (bom Oct. 1, 1741) daughter of Col. Pete Jefferson, and sister of President Jefferson.

John Bolling lived first in Goochland (where in the land tax book of 1783 he was assessed with 1800 acres of land and was a member of the House of Burgesses for that County at the sessions of November 1766, March 1767 and March 1768; but afterwards removed to Chestnut Grove, Chesterfield County. During the Revolution he held some office, probably paymaster, in the militia of that county. In the Council Journal, under date Oct. 25, 1776, is entered a warrant to John Boiling for £ 12,15.11, for 118 days pay of drtunmers and fifers in the Chesterfield militia, and for colours, haFouts, drums and fifes furnished the said militia by the Captains Royal. Harris and Cread as accts. settled by the commissioners.

Mary Jefferson Bolling (1741-1804) was Thomas Jefferson's older sister. Born on October 1, 1741, she was the second of the ten children born to Jane Randolph and Peter Jefferson. She may have been born at her parents' residence at Fine Creek.1

Mary Jefferson married John Bolling (1737-1800) on January 24, 1760. They had ten children:

The Bollings lived at Fairfields in Goochland County and Lickinghole Creek, just west of Goochland Courthouse. In 1785, they moved to Chestnut Grove, Bolling's family plantation in Chesterfield County, while their oldest son Jack assumed ownership of Fairfields.

Thomas Jefferson's granddaughter wrote to him on January 21, 1804, "I suppose you have heard of Aunt Bolling's death." Her death most likely occurred in early 1804, or possibly late 1803. Given the close distances involved, the former seems more likely. [4]
