Father: John J. Bowman, Sr

Born: 10/20/1781 in MD

Died: 01/27/1867 in Probably Elkhart County, IN

Notes: born about 1782 in MD/1781

Within Wilbert Beeghly's unpublished work, John Bowman, d. Jan 27, 1867, burial Union Chapel cemetery near Millersburg, IN. Age at death is shown as 85 years, 3 months, 7 days. Farmer, German Baptist Brethren. July 1998, received ancestral chart from Mrs. Barbara Jewett from Goshen, IN. Mrs. Jewett has John J. Bowman, born Oct 20, 1781, Married at Cavetown, (maybe it was the COVE near Accident) MD, died Jan 1, 1867 Clinton Twp. Elkhart County, IN. Burial Union Cemetery. She also sent a hand written paper from C.L.Hilsabeck from Austin TX. Title of that paper is Earlier History of the Bowman Family, Descandants of John Bowman of PA. A great part of that paper is what Michael Bowman had prepared, and I mention parts below. May 1998 update: Found in the vertical files at the Garrett County Historical Society in Oakland, MD. A letter dated March 18, 1971 from Mrs. William Annis from Fair Oaks, CA. She mentions that one of Daniel Bowmans sons, Michael Bowman, born April 21, 1845 started a history of the Bowman family. Daniel was a son of John J. Bowman, SR. For the greater part she mentions about the same as I have wrote about the Michael Bowman paper. Here is something important that she writes that should help date the death of John and Ben Bowman's father. Mrs. Annis states that at about the close of the American Revolution the father of John Bowman, Sr and Benjamin Bowman was drowned while crossing the Juanita River in PA with a team. The boys were raised by strangers. Nothing is know about Benjamin except that he did marry. Mrs. Annis goes on to, for the greater part, repeat what I have written about the Michael Bowman paper. Later when I have time I will enter all she has to say, just for comparison for others researchers that follow. That may be reduntant to some. While I believe that is an important aproach for this research! Also in that vertical file with the Garrett County Historical Society are these Bowman Notes that were assembled in 1969 by Eber Cockley of Meyersdale, PA, also on page 4, of the Laurel Messanger, has an article with title "John Bowman Family left Co. 1865." Both of those papers have this about John Bowman: John J. Bowman, Sr and John J. Bowman, Jr. families from Somerset County, PA settled Elkhart County, IN about 1865. They were affiliated with the Brethern Church, (Old Order Dunkard). The Bowman homestead consisted of 337 acres and improvements, located Northwest of Grantsville, MD on the West side of Negro mountain. It was owned in 1934 by the Ross Wright family. John J. Bowman, SR was born in MD. Oct 20, 1781. First wife Elizabeth (Beeghly), he married his second wife Mary Romesburg on Jan 11, 1853. John Bowman was from Addison Township, she was from Elk Lick Township, both from PA. He continues on to state that he died Jan 27, 1862. (Could be a mistakel! That is not likely his date of death, since he writes above that he settled Elkhart County, IN. in about 1865) (While in other papers I have seen death was Jan 27, 1867) Now back to that vertical file, some one has made a pen and ink note that he had 15 children, 14 born in MD and one in PA. Thirteen children by first wife Elizabeth Beeghly. Mr. Cockley goes on to list information from the census: John Bowman, Sr, age 68, farmer, born MD, valuation $3,000.00. 1850 census for Addison Township, PA, dwelling #22; (his 10th child) Jacob Bowman, age 22 farmer, born MD, May 17, 1828; (his 11th child) Joshua Bowman, age 18,born MD, Oct (18), 1831; (his 12th child) Emanuel Bowman, age 16, born MD, Mar 17, 1833; (his 14th child)

Family Group 03/19/2000

A note to show other children of John Bowman, SR are Sarah Bowman (3rd child),Samuel Bowman (6th child), John Bowman, JR (8th child), Solomon Bowman (9th child), David Bowman (1st child) ,Daniel Bowman (2nd child), Benjamin Bowman (4th Child),Folly Bowman (5th child) and Elizabeth Bowman (7th child). Bowman, wife, age 40; Lydia Bowman, age 13; Joseph Bowman, age 9; Cornelius Bowman, age 9; Noah Bowman, age 5; and Catherine Bowman, age 3. (I wonder if Cornelius and Joseph were twins.) Now 1850 census information for Solomon Bowman, age 24, farmer, born MD, (family 21, dwelling 22, sames as John Bowman, SR.); wife Elizabeth age 25, born PA; Sarah age 4, born PA; Benjamin age 1 month, born, PA. He had ten children to second marriage: Anna Bowman, born Dec 9, 1918; Samuel Bowman, born Mar 21, 1920; Lydia Bowman, born Jul 16, 1922; Mary Bowman, born Aug 4, 1923; Fanny Bowman, born Jan 25, 1926; Katherine Bowman, born Sep 17, 1928, died Nov 23, 1928; Elizabeth Bowman, born Feb 15, 1931; Joseph Bowman, born Jul 3, 1932; Harvey Bowman, born June 28, 1934; Eli Bowman Jul 11, 1936; and Daniel Bowman, born Jan 7, 1938. From a May 14, 1998 e-mail message, Densie Gerard from Crellin, MD provides this information on John Bowman, SR. Her source was the Family Treemaker. Denise has that John J. Bowman, Sr was born October 20, 1781 and died January 27, 1867. He married Elizabeth Beeghly, born between 1820 - 1852, a daughter of Jacob Beeghley and Mary Hendricks. She lists 13 children of John and Elizabeth Bowman. Also, she shows descendants of John J. Bowman and Elizabeth Shoemaker Bowman, and their daughter Margaret Bowman that married John E. Chupp. That information is shown with John Bowman, Jr's family sheets. August 1997: Here are some abstracts from Emmert F. Bittinger's publish book "Allegheny Passage" This is an important work on the Church of the Brethren. It covers the West Marva District for period 1752 - 1990. A glance at his book and we find that Mr. Bittinger has done extensive research and compiled Brethren Church information, he has also compiled important Brethren family information. Here is what he writes about the Bowman family: on page 254 he mentions George Sr. and John Bowman in Hampshire County, VA (WV) in 1790. On page 450 he covers the Bear Creek Congregation of Accident MD.

located in the Cove Area of Garrett County, MD. (Bear Creek Cove) As discussed on page 451, In 1824 John Bowman owned land in the Cove. Earlier, John Bowman had purchased land near the PA and MD border from Jacob Beeghly. A Jacob Beeghly was the father of John Bowmans wife Elizabeth Beeghly. She was born July 28, 1792. A footnote mentions that a Louisa Thomas is also said to have married a John Bowman. From this work of Emmert Bittinger we know that John Bowman was in the Cove area.

As I have mentioned below, Michael Bowman's papers indicated that John Bowman had a second wife. May 1998 update shows that second wife was Mary Romesburg, b. Jan 11, 1853, from Elk Lick Township, PA. As I mentioned in my notes of May 1, 1991, I had determined that a headstone in the Hileman Cemetery at the Cove near Accident in Garrett County, MD has: John F. Bowman. 1780 - 1867, Husband of Elizabeth B. 1817 - 1877. I am uncertain whether this John and Elizabeth are part of our Bowman family. July 1997 update: from the book "Two Centuries of Brothersvalley Church of the Bretheren", 1762 to 1962, by H. Austin Cooper, within the Appendix C, I found Ohio Migrations, John Bowman to Logan County Ohio about 1800. In Appendix I found that in 1781 three Bowman brothers: Peter, Benjamin, and'Joseph left Brothers Valley and moved to near Linville Creek area. They left a brother Jacob in Somerset County. He always spelled his name Bauman. Have no idea if any of that is our Bowman family. Mr. Emmert F. Bittinger can not aggree with some of Mr. Coopers work. Will continue to research this family.!!! ) (A couple of other sources (1) we see on page 13 of Amish and Amish Mennonite Genealogies, by Hugh F. Gingerich and Rachel W. Kreider, Pequea Publishers, Gordonville, PA 17529, first printing 1986. Daughter of Jacob Beeghly and Mary Hendricks, Elizabeth Beeghly born on 07/28/1792 married John Bowman. Source (2) As compiled and published by Wilbert G. Beeghly, Pittsburg, Pa (in later years he settled in Somerset County, Pa. (Myersdale, PA). Source (3) Michael Bowman "A Record of The Bowman Family", via Don Bowman from Brookville, Ohio 45309. John Bowman married Barbary Beakly. To this union was born thirteen children, he also had a child by his second marriage in his old age. He came with his son to Elkart County, In., and his remains are laid to rest in the Union Cemetery in Clinton township, 1.5 miles Northeast of Rock Run Church. Children with second wife: (1) Delilah Bowman, b.Oct 28, 1842 or 1843, MD married Harrison Storner of Somerset County, PA. (2) Barbara Bowman, b. Sep 12, 1847 or 1848, PA, died of typhoid fever as a very young child. (From Michael Bowman's paper) For the greater part, this draft of this Bowman family is based on family traditions. I have found no good reason to leave any of what I discover from this draft. Let me caution that except where I have noted, I have no official source's, that is no birth records, no marriage records or wills, that will support what I have compiled. Official support and other sources shall be listed when found or known. Therefore, since the old works of Michael Bowman paper shows John Bowman with 13 children and a wife Barbara Beakly (Beeghly), and the old work of Wilbert G. Beeghly, and the other sources mentioned above show that John Bowman married Elizabeth Beeghly, I have been reasonable and show John's wife first name as Elizabeth and her middle name, as Barbara. Except for the sources I have listed above, I have nothing to prove what her name was. This is added for further research.
