About John Bristow, of Middlesex County

Evidence needed to support as son of Robert Bristow, of Virginia and London

John Bristow

  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT. 1649 in England 1
  • Death: 10 Oct 1716 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Cty, Virginia 2

Disputed Parents

This John Bristow was not the son of Robert Bristow and Catherine Wooley.

Robert Bristow and Catherine Wooley were married in 1684 in London, England. They did have a son John, their youngest son, who was born before 1700 in London, England, and married in 1733 Anne-Judith, daughter of Paul Foisin, an East Indian merchant in Paris. John died in Lisbon in 1768.[3] John, youngest son of Robert Bristow and Catherine Wooley, was named in the will of his grandfather Robert Bristow dated 20 September 1700 and proved 29 November 1707. He was under age 21 when his grandfather's will was written.[4]

“ All records I can find list Robert Bristow Jr. (only son of Robert Bristow m. Averilla Curtis) list that he married Catherine Wooley in 1684 and not 1648 as suggested, which fits with all the birth dates I can find of around 1662, meaning it's impossible for those to be his parents since he's older than them. Robert Sr. is also referenced as being born 1643 so isn't either a father or grandfather.”

Research Notes:

Note: "John Bristow, as a youth, was found wandering in the Colony in 1663. The Lancaster County Order Book was the earliest mention him that has been found. It said, "John BRISTOW svnt to John HUGHES coming into this country without indenture & appearing to this Cort is ordered to serve seven years from his arrival." As a minor, he would be subject to the laws of the days relating to orphans, runaways, etc. As he is ordered to serve seven years we can set his age as being about fourteen in 1663. This would make the year of his birth 1649. There is no tradition and no record yet found as to why he, a lad of fourteen, appeared in Virginia without papers. However, because he could offer no good reason for his being there he was indentured for a period of seven years. After completing his service, John lived the rest of his life as a respected and public spirited citizen of Middlesex County, Virginia.

When he died in 1716 John Bristow left a substantial estate in land and slaves, and a reputation for service to his community and to his church. He had served as juror, appraiser, militia man, clerk of the Vestry, and, for many years a lay reader at the Upper Chapel of Convenience of Christ Church." [1]

Note: " " From book "John Bristow of Middlesex County, Virginia and descendants (thru 10 generations)" published by Vantage Press, Ind, NY, Washington, Hollywood, by Gordon Byron Woolley, states "John Bristow of Middlesex County, Va, progenitor of considerable progeny, spread thruout the US.Family was English, name can be found in English records going back to Tudor times.Seat of Lawrence, a village about midway between London and Oxford.John Bristow sent to John Hughes coming into this country without indenture and appearing to this court is ordered to serve seven years from his arrival."As a minor was subject to laws of those days relating to orphans, runaways, etc., age presumed to be about 14 with birth date 1649.Surname meaning for "Bristow" .. English: habitational name from the city of Bristol, named in Old English with brycg ‘bridge’ + stow ‘assembly place’. The final -l of the modern form is due to a regional pronunciation. "[2]

Note: submitted research: John was married two times. First Michal Nicholls in 1679. They had 10 children" . After her death, John married Mary Goodloe Carter on 8 Jan 1711. They had two children, Jedidiah 1713, and Mary, 15 Aug 1715. Another child Anne, was mentioned but was born to her and William Carter prior to marriage to John."
