  • 15th – George Buchanan, (Guthrie Smith identifies him as 10th Chief and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 17th Chief) succeed his grandfather, Walter 14th of Buchanan, in 1526 and died 1560. He first married Margaret Edmonstone and by her a son (John [Guthrie Smith identifies him as 11th Chief but then goes on to advise that the Chiefship passed from John’s father to John’s son[78] and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 18th Chief[79 who married Elizabeth Livingston and by her had George[79] who succeeded his grandfather) and two daughters (Helen and Susanna). Second he married Janet Cunningham and by her had a son (William first ancestor of the cadets of Auchmar) and a daughter (Margaret).

  • resigned the lordship to his son Walter, the fourth of the name, in 1474. The next in the succession was Patrick, the second of the name, whose wife was daughter of the Earl of Argyle. After George, the seventeenth laird, came John, who married a daughter of Lord Livingstone. The succession was continued regularly to the twenty-second laird, who was John, the third of the name, and who married for first wife Mary, daughter of Lord Henry Cardross, and died in 1682, leaving two daughters. With him the lairdship, after continuing in the name six hundred and sixty-five years without interruption, expired, the estates having been put out of entail by his immediate predecessors, and now became entirely alienated, and the title, "Buchanan of that Ilk," extinct. The estates passed into the hands of the Duke of Montrose.

  • X. GEORGE BUCHANAN of that Ilk succeeded his grandfather in 1526. On the 8th February 1515-16 there is a remission to George Buchanan, grandson and apparent heir of Walter Buchanan of that Ilk;6 and in 1526 George Buchanan of that Ilk was infeft in certain lands as heir to his grandfather, Walter Buchanan of that Ilk, then deceased. George Buchanan of that Ilk married, first, Margaret Edmonstone ; second, Janet Cunynghame. There is a charter to George Buchanan, grandson and heir apparent of Walter Buchanan of that Ilk, and Margaret Edmonstone, wife of the said George, 2nd January 1508-9;' also on 7th April 1530, confirmation by King James V. to George Buchanan of that Ilk and Jonet Cunynghame, his spouse, of certain lands resigned by the same George.8 He had issue: (1) John; (2) William, first of Auchmar;9 and (1) a daughter, Margaret, wife successively of George Stirling of Glorat and Mathew Douglas of Mains. 10 Auchmar says that John Buchanan, the eldest son, was by George's first wife, William and
