John Burruss may have been born in the Colony of Virgina. There was a John Burrus/ Burras/ Burrows in Jamestown in 1608. Whether Pioneer John Burruss is the grandson of John Burrowes of Jamestown isn't proven. Records showing lineage are no longer extant. Almost nothing is known of John's birth, parents, and childhood, and a birth year was based on the few records that have survived.

It has been assumed that John Burruss was at least 21 years old, when he received his first known patent, making his birth year approximately 1640. He died shortly after the 1700 Poll Tax, as evidenced by Tax Rolls and Deed records.

On April 25, 1701, JOHN BURROWS received a Land patent for 439 acres, in St. John's Parish, in King and Queen County, on the Pamunkey Neck, located on the west side of John's Creek, adjacent to the property of William Woodward, and Mrs. Gouge. (4)

Again in 1701/1702. King William County, Virginia was formed from parts of King and Queen County From the above patents, it can be ascertained that John Burruss owned the same property originally located in New Kent County, and later the county of King and Queen, which ultimately became King William County, Virginia., owning the same property for about thrity years report was issued by a committee formed to examine the claims for land located in the Pamunkey Neck, including the claims made by a treaty with the Pamunkey Indians. According to the records, JOHN BURROSS, claimed to have been seated in June 1699 for at least thirteen years on 590 acres, located on the south side of the Blackwater Swamp (5) < BR>

John BURRUS, Jr. b: Abt. 1625 in St Peters Parish, James City, VA d: Abt. 1705 in King William Co, VA +Unknown WOODARD[1]

Although primary sources from Jamestown and surrounding areas have disappeared, at least one modern genealogist of the Burrows, Burrus, Burris pioneer families of 17th Century colonial Virginia has concluded that John Burrows aka Burrus, who was born in 1578 in England, arrived at Jamestown Virginia in 1608 as part of the Second Supply. He was part of the 1624 Jamestown VA muster (census), living at "Burrowes Hill" on the south side of the James River. In 1628 he was murdered in Jamestown, before which he John Burrows/Burrus had a son: John Burrus, Jr., born between the 1624 census and his father's 1628 death. In Jamestown, John Burrows Sr. married Bridget Buck, whose father was the first Anglican priest and pastor for the Jamestown colony. [2]

This John Burruss appears to NOT be the same as the husband of Bridget Bucke, and he should be detached from her as spouse, along with the children who are attached to this John. Bridget Bucke is NOT their mother. Also, many of the other children and descendants on this line are wildly misplaced, and need to be researched and properly sorted. Some seem to be close relatives of nearby profiles, but others are not.

A John Borras and William Woodward received a land patent of 179 acres in New Kent Co., VA on 17 March 1667/68 , North side of the York River, adjacent to John's Creek, adjacent to Mr. Woodward. John Burross received a land patent in 1699 in King & Queen Co., VA involving 590 acres on Pamunkey Neck (this land was cut out to be in King Wil liam Co., VA when the County was formed in 1701/02). The patent says that he had been seated (on the land?) for 13 years at the time of the land grant. The reference to this patent is in "English Duplicates of Lost V irginia Records , page 60. It should be in the Virginia Land Patent Books ( and may be there), but so far I have not found it. Also, "John Burrows" received a 439 acres track of land located on Pamunkey Neck, King and Queen Co., VA, located in St. John Parish, by land patent dated 25 Apr. 1701 for importing 9 person, said land being adjacent to William Woodward and Mrs. Gouge's line. He granted 100 acres to his "son" John Burrus on 19 Jan 1702. King William County was formed in 1701-1702 from King & Queen Co., VA. In 1705/06 there are several deeds involving John Burrus, Jr., Thomas Burruss, Jacob Burrus, Edmund Burrus, Charles Burrus and William Burrus all of St. John's Parish, King William Co., VA which establish that John Burrus, Sr., has died and these are his children who are dealing with land which some or all of them inherited from their father who died between 1702 -1705.
