John Byles, (81), the farmer who was attacked and assaulted with a spade on 5th September on a farm near Hartswater in the Northern Cape, died Monday morning in a hospital in Kimberley.
Byles died in the Mediclinic Gariep at about 02:00. Byles was discharged from the hospital after the attack on September, but fell in his home two weeks ago and was then re-admitted to the hospital. "He underwent emergency surgery last Thursday and was in the emergency unit all the time." Cloete says he learned that the pressure on Byles's brain was related to the injuries he sustained during the attack
No one has been arrested in connection with the attack.
Maroela Media reported earlier that Byles had been attacked by two men outside his house at about 07:00 in the morning. The attackers initially attacked Byles with their fists before using a spade to assault him. They also threw weed poison in his face and eyes. "He crawled under his bakkie and tried to keep his head as high as possible so they couldn't hit him over the head with the spade. It really is a miracle that he survived, ”Cloete told Maroela Media at the time.
