About John Bird, Goldsmith of London

John Bird, b: 1620, Middlesex, London, England, also died there in 1677. He never immigrated to the Virginia Colony. His surname was Bird not Byrd. He never changed his surname from Bird to Byrd. He was a goldsmith, having apprenticed with John Trevillian. John was socially considered, at best, middle class. He died 1677. His wife, Grace (Stegge), died in 1688 in London.

John married Grace Stegge, and to this union at least 2 children were born: William and Thomas, who both immigrated to VA. William Evelyn Bird was the elder son, and as a commitment for his coming to Virginia was bequeathed much property in a 31 Mar 1669 will by his uncle, Thomas Stegge (Jr.). After immigrating to Virginia, he changed his surname to Byrd. He became quite properous in Indian trading, political positions and later tobacco plantations. Thomas, not having inherited any land in Virginia, remained in England until after the December, 1690, death of his first wife and child. He then immigrated to what is now Henrico Co., VA and married a second time. His second wife, died shortly after him in 1710.

JOHN BIRD was a son of THOMAS BIRD, b: 1599; d: 1623. That Thomas, was the last direct male ancestor to be born at Broxton, Cheshire, England. Thomas became a vintner after a 1608-1616 apprenticeship under Henry Sacheverell. Thomas Bird married his cousin Elizabeth Byrd 18 Sep 1617 in London, England, at St. Andrews by the Wardrobe
