John Sumner b. in Oroton, N.H. 8 Jan, 1843. He enlisted in Co. F, 1st Reg' t ,Wis for three months; was in the fight at Falling Waters, Va; was at Martinsburg and Harper's Ferry. He again enlisted in Co. E 74th Reg' t Ill. Left Rockford Sept., 1862; went with Gen Buel after Bragg to Nashville; was in the Stone River fight and at Winchester, Tenn. 1863; crossed the Cumberland Mountains in the 20th corps also Lookout Mountain; was in Chattanooga besieged three months in September, October, and November; 1863; in Charlestown, Tenn. fight Dec., 1863; in Dalton, Ga fight also Resaca and was wounded in the retreat from Resaca, in the rear guard, twelve miles from Kinston, Ga,\. 17 May, 1864, by a buckshot in the small bones of his left foot; was at home in Rockton from the Jefferson Barracks, Missouri Nov., 1864; on furlough to vote against the enemies of his country with the lead in his foot, He then went into the commissary department. After the war he was one of the four young soldiers selected by the State of Illinois to be educated.
