origins
Parentage of John Child: It is fairly well proven that John Child was a nephew of Ephram Child of Watertown, and so a grandson of Wolstone Child (d. 1600/1) and his wife Ellen Empson (d. 1616). (TAG 63).
Author Paul Child, who did extensive research on this Child family in London, further asserts that John Child of Watertown was the son of Joshua Child and his wife Mary Sadler, and that Joshua was the son of Wolstone Childe and his wife Ellen Empson. Joshua Child died in England in 1638. Paul Child asserts that uncle Ephraim Child brought John Child and his brothers Richard and Joseph to Watertown in 1648 (as well as four other of his nephews). Baptism records are unavailable for this period in the London parish, St. Ethelburga, where Joshua Child lived. (Childe of England)
Author Elias Child in his "Genealogy of the Child, Childs and Childe Families..." asserted that John and Richard Childs were the sons of a William Child who was in Watertown in 1634. This assertion has been disproved by TAG editor Robert Charles Anderson, who wrote: "William Child...of Watertown...did not exist. He was apparently conjured up out of whole cloth by Elias Child in his 'Genealogy of the Child, Childs and Childe Families...' ... There is...no record of a freeman named William Child in 1634 or at any other time. ... Very few births are on record for Watertown in the early 1630s, and certainly none for members of the Child family. And finally, the will of Elizabeth Child, does not mention a sister-in-law...Richard and John Child did exist and...were mentioned in the will of Ephraim Child, but there is nothing to suggest that their father was ever in New England or that his name was William." (Tag 62).6,2,7,8
