John Childress, III

John Childress III was born about 1777. He married Mary Polly Kirby Childress on November 08, 1796 in Blount County, TN (Witness James Houston, bondsman, Robt Rhea). They had two sons:

Richard Hamilton Childress, born May 20, 1796 in Blount County, TN and died March 20, 1862 in Ashmore, Coles County, Illinois.

John Kirby Childress, born November 06, 1815 and died November 24, 1897. He married Ruth Burgess (born March 11, 1820, and died April 25, 1877). They had these children:

Kitty Childress, born about July 08, 1832; died about April 15, 1907. Isabella Childress, born about 1842; married John D. ALlen on September 27, 1863. Mary Missouri Childress, born October 19, 1843; died October 23, 1918. Martha Childress, born 1845. Temperance Kirby Childress, born March 1850; died November 02, 1906. She marred GEORGE W SMITH; born January 1846. Silas Parsons Childress, born February 02, 1851; died November 23, 1901. Hugh G. Childress, born October 1853; died January 1903. ALonzo Childress, born July 07, 1856; died October 26, 1896. Ida Childress, born 1858, Lived in Langston,, AL and married Arthur Jones on November 21, 1883.

This cemetery is located on the Childress homesite.

A John Childress is listed as a Pvt in Capt Evan's Company, Knox County Regt, Hamilton Dist Militia, Territory South of the Ohio (1792-1794) (Later Tennessee), Believe this was John III as John Jr was still in Wilkes County, NC as late as May 1794.

War of 1812, John Childress enlisted as a Pvt in Maj John Chiles Battalion, Mounted Gunmen, East TN Volunters (discharged as a Pvt). --- War of 1812 Muster Rolls, NARA Record Group 94, M602, Roll 39.

1830 Federal Census for Anderson County, TN lists John Childress as head-of-household consisting of 2 WM (under 5), 1 WM (10-15), 1 WM (15-20), 1 WM (30-40), 1 WF (under 5), 1 WF (5-10), 1WF (10-15), 1 WF (15-20) and 1 WF (30-40).

1840 Federal Census for Anderson County, TN lists John Childress as head-of-household consisting of 1 WM (-5) 2 WM (5-10), 1 WM (10-15), 1 WM (15-20, 1WM (50-60), 1 WF (-5), 1 WF (5-10) 2 WF (20-30) and 1 WF (50-60).

John married Mary Kirby 1796 in Blount county, Tennessee and they had a son. Joel Childress, b. 1798, Knox County, Tennessee, Any information on John and Mary would be so helpful and grateful .
