About John Churchill, Sr.

John ( Churcher ) Churchill Sr. was born in Greenwich,Ct, June 3, 1744.

( was born the year after Thomas Jefferson was born )
He was the second born to Edward ( Churcher ) Churchill & Esther ( Hull ) Churcher. His mother was only 16 years old when he was born. His elder brother James died in infancy ( when his mother was only 14y ).

He lived in Milford Ct for a while , He was there at the time of his brother, Edward Churchill Jr. death ( 1775 ), He served in the Revolutionary War. He was probably living in Milford when he enlisted in the Continental Army ( Dec 12th 1779 ). He was 35 years old. He was in the Second Connecticut Regiment under Col Zebulon Butler. ( Capt Wolcott's Company ). Listed in his possessions at the time of his death was ( One Military Gun & Bayonet ).
He then removed to Northfield Ct where he lived as a farmer. He lived to be 71 years old. His father Edward died at 32 y. and his grandfather Robert at 57y

He was the fourth generation in the Manhattan Churchill ( Churcher ) line and perhaps the first to adopt the name Churchill over "Churcher".

  He was married twice ( both wives named Sarah??? ) He had Five children with the first Wife , Sarah ( Allen ) Churchill.

The 2nd Connecticut Regiment

was authorized in the Continental Army on 16 September 1776. It was organized between 1 January and April 1777 at Danbury, Connecticut of eight companies from the counties of Fairfield, Windham, and Hartford in the state of Connecticut and assigned on 3 April 1777 to the 1st Connecticut Brigade of the Highlands Department. The regiment was reassigned to McDougall's Brigade on 12 June 1777; then three days later (15 June 1777 it was reassigned to the 2nd Connecticut Brigade. One month later, 10 July 1777 the regiment was reassigned to 1st Connecticut Brigade. On 13 November 1777 the regiment was reassigned to the 2nd Connecticut Brigade of the Main Continental Army. On 1 May 1779 the 2nd Connecticut Brigade was reassigned to the Highlands department and the regiment was re-organized to nine companies on 11 July 1779. The regiment was reassigned to the Main Continental Army on 16 November 1779. It was reassigned to the Highland's department on 27 November 1780. On 1 January 1781 the regiment was merged with 9th Connecticut Regiment, re-organized and re-designated as the 3rd Connecticut Regiment of the 1st Connecticut Brigade. The regiment would see action in the New York Campaign, Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Monmouth. The regiment was furloughed 15 June 1783 at West Point, New York and disbanded on 15 November 1783.

    To John Churchill son of the deceased one piece of land lying at the west end of the farm near Benjamin Harts, bounded north on Thomas Stevens land East on land distributed to the widow of the deceased South & West partly on highway and partly on Benjamin Harts land, containing nine acres one road and partly two rods with a small barn standing there on - Also one other piece of land lying on the north east corner of said farm bounded North on Joseph Stevens last East on Ebeneezer Curtis's land south on land we this day set to William Churchill ________ on land we this day set to Sally Oviatt being thereby two rods long and four rods wide containing there Roads & Eight Rods

Being Nineteen Rods and ______ links wide and extending the whole width of the farm
     To Garry Churchill son of the deceased  piece of land lying near where he now lives north on land set to the widow of the deceased east of highway south on his own land and west on Samuel M Merwins land being Eight Rods and 1 1/2 links at the east end and Seven rods & thirteen Links to the west and extending the whole length of  farm, containing two acres and eighteen rods also one other piece of wood land lying west of the road heading from Benjamin Harts to Jef___ Stevens bounded north and East on highway, South on Benjamin Harts land west on Thomas Stevens land East on land containing Two acres two Roads and Twenty rods- Also half of the House where he now lives being the _____ of the same with half of the milk room being the south half of the same with the privilege of ______ out and in at the west door and of using the _____ in the will and of _____ing to and from the char___ Also one third part of the barn being eight _____ through the center of the same the whole length, one third of the cow house being the Northeast part of the same.
