Misidentification
John Cleland in Arnbrae, here treated, has been identified in error as the son of Alexander Cleland, fiar of that Ilk and his wife Mary Hamilton According to Stillman Foster Kneeland, writing in "Seven Centuries in the Kneeland Family (1897)," this couple did have a third son named John, but he is reported to have settled at Laird Braes in Wigtonshire, and has no known connection with Campsie or Kilsyth in Stirlingshire. Kneeland Family 33 It follows, therefore, that John Cleland, in Arnbrae is not the same person as John Cleland of Laird Braes
The Question of Identity
John Cleland in Arnbrae here treated, is identified as the son of Alexander Cleland and Jane Hamilton in at least two pedigrees published by MyHeritage which claim that he was born at Kilsyth in Stirlingshire on 1 August 1620. Baptismal records are available at Kilsyth from 1620 onwards but there were no Cleland baptisms recorded in that year. Consequently, it is impossible to identify his parents from this source. It should also be noted that at the time of his marriage in 1648 John Cleland in Arnbrae, here treated, was a resident of Campsie parish, rather than Kilsyth parish. MyHeritage
