The Welsh word "Coll-lle" signifies the place of "Hazel." The Gaelic word "Coille," means a "Wood." The true origin or meaning of this name is ambiguous and it would be incertious if attached to any source. Several different forms of spelling have appeared, such as: Cooly, Cooley, Coolle, Coley, Colley, Colle and Cole.
The English origin of the below mentioned Coley family is unknown to me at this time. Because Samuel appears with the Prudden group at Milford, we may assume that he could have been from county Hertfordshire, as were most of Milford's inhabitants. This theory is speculative because Samuel appears in New England several years before the Prudden group arrived.
