Summary for John Cox

  • Birth: Sept. (7 mo.) 24, 1675, somewherer in England (however, this is likely asserted based on the birth information for the John Cox, born to Thomas Cox, Vintner of London, which took place at Haymarket, London - if the birth date is based on the marriage date, the likely birth date would be closer to 1667 or earlier, but no reliable sources yet point to this date)
  • Baptism: Unknown
  • Marriage: Probably 1685, somewhere in England (if the 1675 birth date turns out to be incorrect)
  • Death: Probably in Chester County, Province of Pennsylvania (early half of the 18th century, Bell asserts 1711 at Kennett Meeting in Chester County)
  • Burial: Unknown.
  • Occupation: Landowner, possible early sponsor of the Huntington Friends Meeting.
  • Timeline:
    • 1667: Unsupported estimate of birth if he isn't the John Cox who was son of Thomas Cox, Vintner of London.
    • 1675, Sept. 24: birth date of the John Cox, who was the son of Thomas Cox, Vintner of London
    • 1684: Bell's asserted date of marriage in England (exact location unknown, but likely under the auspices of a Quaker Friends Meeting)
    • 1686: Bell's asserted date of first born child Joseph. Likely all children were born in England.
    • 1698: Bell's asserted date of last born child Amy.
    • 1708: arrived at New Castle, Lower Counties on the Delaware from England with wife Rachel.
    • 1711: Bell's asserted date of death.
    • 1712: first marriages of John's children (Richard with Margaret Potts on March 26, Sarah with Thomas Leach, Ann with Casparus Garretson in 1713)
    • 1745, June (Mo. 4) 9: named as home owner whose house held the Huntington Monthly Meeting.

  • Siblings: Unknown.
  • Children (all born in England):
    • 1. Joseph (b. 1686),

Please note: Although a lot of the data for this branch of family is not adequately sourced, it is necessary that assertions be attributed, so that their accuracy can be checked against competing assertions (at least until one set of assertions is more universally recognized as authoritative). -Ben M. The following paper drawn up a that time is of interest as showing who were the subscribers to the fund for the building of the first meeting-house:

We the Subscribers, knowing the Necessity of Publick Worship & being Destitute of a Piece of Land to Set a Meeting House on Do Each of us Promise to pay the Respective sums under written in order to get a Warrent for 25 acres of Land adjoyning Stephen Ail's Land, as witness our Hands:

Manuscript, among title papers of Menallen Monthly Meeting. This long meeting-house stood a little south-east of the present stone building, on a part of the tract that has since been enclosed in the graveyard. The foundations were discovered in the latter 80s by persons digging in the graveyard.

About nine miles southwest of Warrington, in Latimer, now Huntington Township, Adams County, is Huntington Meeting House, situated on a wooded ridge overlooking Bermudian Creek, some two miles southeast of the Borough of York Springs, formerly Peterburg. Unauthorized meetings were held in the neighborhood as early as 1745, for at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting, 9 Mo. 4, 1745, William Garretson was directed to read three papers of acknowledgement "at Huntington Meeting." These meetings were evidently convened at the house of John Cox, where nearly all the early marriages (took place).

Joseph Cox - Ancestors and Descendants

  • Compiled with the assistance of other members of the family
  • By Stanley M. Cox - 1955

1. John Cox - thought to have been a son of Thomas Cox of London. There are some facts indicating that John Cox was probably born in Drayton, Berkshire, England. John Cox and his wife Rachel arrived in New Castle County, Delaware, in 1708, apparently from England. The Cox Family in America suggests that he had brothers Thomas and Richard. Possibly there were others.

Children of John and Rachel Cox:

  • 1. John, birth date unknown. Married Mary. May have married Hannah Jenkins first, about 1720.
  • 2. Richard, married Margaret Potts, March 26, 1712.
  • 3. Sarah, married Thomas Leach, 1712
  • 4. Joseph
  • 5. William, married Katherine Kinkey. They had a son, Solomon, who married Ruth. Quaker records indicate that this Solomon was received by the Quakers in Cane Creek, North Carolina, on Oct. 6, 1753.
  • 6. Ann, married Casparus Garretson, 1713.
  • 7. Thomas, married (a) Elizabeth Fincher, 1722; (b0 Mary Cooke, 1730.
  • 8. Amy, married John Allen, 1719. John Allen was a witness to the will of William Cox (6), his brother-in-law.

There were possibly other children. Old records are not always complete.

Elizabeth Scarlett's brother, Nathanial, had a daughter named Mary Scarlett. Mary Scarlett married John Cox (born 1728). John Cox was the grandson of John Cox and Rachel Embree Carr, through their son, William.

Elizabeth Scarlett married Richard Cox, who was the son of John Cox and Rachel Embree Carr.

Detailed information regarding the history of John Cox and Rachel Embree Carr is documented in Chapter 11 of Dixon Family History by Mary Grant Bell (ISBN: 978-0-615-14973-8).

The John Cox who was born to Thomas, the Vintner, did not leave England (source: The Family of Thomas Cox, Vintner, London, England )

Society of Friends London Meeting records and Cox family wills show that the male heirs of Thomas Cox, Vintner, with the surname Cox lived and died in England, not America. Thomas Cox, Vintner, had no surviving great-grandsons with the surname Cox. Several men named Thomas Cox and John Cox appear in early Pennsylvania and New Jersey records. They can not be the legitimate sons, grandsons, or great-grandsons of this Thomas Cox of London, the very wealthy Quaker, Citizen, Vintner and Proprietor. jcw, May, 2009

This family history is from my small book Thomas Cox, Citizen and Vintner, of London, England, ©2009. Some of this information was published in my 1989 book A Cox Family History from Thomas Cox, 1694-1762, ©1989).
