John was born the 3rd child, of the 10 children, of Lieutenant Jonathan, and Deborah (Griswold) Crane. He was born October 1, 1687, probably in Norwich Connecticut. In 1698, when John was 10, both of his newly born twin sisters died. Six years later, in 1704, John's mother Deborah died. He was 17 years old at the time. When John was about 21, he married his first wife, Sarah Spencer, Sept. 16. 1708, in Windham Connecticut. She died 7 years later on Sept. 15. 1715. He was 28 at the time. The couple had no children.

A few months later, on April 18, 1716, John married his second wife Prudence (Belding) Crane. The couple lived near a place called Fort Hill, where his father gave him house and lands on Jan. 18, 1710 or 11. On April 10. 1728, he sold all of his tract of land, dwelling-house, and contents, to Joseph Walden for £300. Later, on April 9, 1730, John Crane now of Wethersfield, for himself, and as attorney for Jonathan Crane of Windham, gave caution to Wethersfield town clerk not to record any 'distribution or agreement in the division of land formerly of Benjamin Crane, senior, and Benjamin, Jr., and also of the land of Isaac Crane, son of Benjamin, Jr., lying in Wethersfield."

He later quitclaimed, to his brother Jonathan, on May 16, 1735. At that time he was said to have been of Coventry Connecticut. The details of John's life, after the age of about 37, become a bit sketchy. Where he lived, and where and when he died, or was buried, cannot be conclusively determined. There were seven John Cranes living in, or around, a 25 mile radius of Coventry simultaneously, during this time. See "Geneaology of the Crane Family Vol. 2" Pg. 241, "John Crane, of Coventry Ct., and His Decendants" by Ellery Bicknell Crane, 1900.
It is even questionable which one is actually buried in the Gurley Burying Grounds in Windham County Connecticut. Perhaps locating the graves of his wives will provide a clue.

"John Crane married 1st, Sarah Spencer, Sept. 16. 1708, at Windham. She died Sept. 15. 1715 ; 2d, Prudence Belding. April 18, 1716. He also quitclaimed to his brother Jonathan, May 16, 1735 ; at which time he was called of Coventry.
