About John Crane

This John Crane , who married Abigail Cross, should not be confused with John Crane, son of Jonathan Crane and Deborah Griswold, who married (1) Sarah Spencer and (2)Prudence Belden. Many unsourced genealogies posted on the Internet have significant errors.

Genealogy of the Crane Family, by Ellery Bicknell Crane (1900), Volume II, which can be found at https://archive.org/details/genealogyofcrane02cran appears to be most authoritative, supported by scholarly published articles, cited below. Ellery Bicknell Crane reports at page 244:

"John Crane was one of the early settlers of Coventry, Conn., born 1689 or 1690, married Abigail Cross, Oct. 29, 1712, she was daughter of Peter Cross of Mansfield, and Mary, his wife. She was born in Windham, June 23, 1694. October, 1743, John Crane of Mansfield, and Wm. Williams with others asked the Assembly to fix site for Second Society Meeting-house. John Crane's will is dated May 31, 1761, proved March 16, 1765, probated March 19, 1765. (Invo. £146-17-6). Will mentions wife Abigail, children Hezekiah, Ebenezer, John, and Mary Allen, three grandchildren of his daughter Abigail Barrows, and three grandchildren of daughter Ruth Paddock. Mrs. Crane's will was dated July 6, 1765, proved Sept. 25, 1765, probated Oct. 1765. He died in Mansfield, March 1, 1765, aged 75. She died Sept. 1, 1765, aged 71. In what has been known as the Gurley burial-ground, situated about a mile and a half northwest from the meeting-house in North Mansfield, John Crane and his wife Abigail were buried, and their grave-stones were standing in 1868, bearing the followinginscriptions: "In memory of Mr. John Craine who died March ye 1765 in ye 76 year of his age," " In memory of Mrs Abigail ye wife of Mr. John Craine, who died Sept ye 1765, in ye year of her age."

Other sources: Genealogies of Connecticut Families: From the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 1, page 492: "There was a John Crane, of Coventry and Mansfield, supposed to belong to this family [Jonathan Crane, son of Benjamin, married to Francis Griswold of Norwich, Ct.], but in what way does not appear. His wife was Abigail, daughter of Peter Cross who removed from Norwich to Windham in company with Jonathan Crane. The name of Deborah is also found, in his family of children and grandchildren; and so far as we can learn, the change of name to Crain is confined to some of the descendants of Jonathan and John, or Mansfield, if he is of another family. He was married October 29, 1712, and had nine children, five sones and four daughters beside one that died in infancy. They were born between 1713 and 1731, and their names are as follows:--Abigail, John, Ebenezer, Mary, Samuel, Hezekiah, Deborah, Daniel and Ruth." http://books.google.com/books?id=k6fDl9gE45IC&pg=PA492&dq=john+cran...

[EDITOR'S NOTE: None of the authorities that I have seen definitively indicate the parents of John Crane, husband of Abigail Cross. His profile is placed here because, after erroneous merges, his profile was combined with John Crane . Because other Geni users linked his parents as John Crane and Abigail Butler, based on many unsourced trees posted on the Internet, I have continued that relationship, Ellery Bicknell Crane cites the Will of John Crane, husband of Abigail Butler for the proposition that Elijah Crane is their only child.John Crane and Abigail Butler were married on October 27, 1692, more than two years after John Crane's birth as indicated on his gravestone. There is some scholarly support for the proposition that the John Crane in this profile is the grandson of Benjamin Crane (c1630-1691) and Mary Backus (1632-1717) Douglas Arthur Kellner]
