John was convicted of stealing (with John BARFORD) and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He arrived in Sydney Cove on 26/1/1788 on "Alexander"

First Fleeter Convict John Cropper, tried at the Old Bailey on 14/12/1785 charged with steeling a trunk of clothing valued at 150 shillings, sentenced to 7 yrs transportation. Was first sent to the hulk 'Ceres' then aged about 31, on 6th Jan 1787 was transferred to the 'Alexander' along with 183 male prisoners. On 13th May 1878 the First Fleet left Portsmith, arriving NSW on 26th January 1788.

By 7th February all prisoners had been unloaded.

On 13th March 1790 John Cropper arrived at Norfolk Island on board the "Alexander'.

1794 John receives his Ticket of Leave (TOL), is free and returns to Port Jackson on board the "Daedalus'. NOTE: On board the "Daedalus' at the time is also convict Frances Williams (also having received her TOL), Marine Robert Ryan (her partner) and their children Elizabeth and Jane. Frances later takes up with John Cropper and has a child with him.

1795 John decides to return to England but his ship is scuttled near New Zealand and he is taken back to Norfolk Island.

1801 John bought 10 acres of land on Norfolk Island from Thomas Gregory. John was associated with the orphan school on Norfolk Island and arranged for Frances Williams' children to be baptised (Elizabeth 9 and Jane 11). After their baptism John Cropper was recorded as Jane's father.

In 1805 John was listed as a settler with a wife Mary (Tuck) - also a convict and one child.

In 1807 when the island was closed a s apenal settlement, John and Mary (Tuck) leave Norfolk Island on board the 'Porpoise'.

On 17th Jan 1808 John, Mary and a son John (listed as Edward) arrive in Van Diemans Land. He was granted 20 acres in Sandy Bay (near what is now known as Long Point).

In 1819 John becomes a constable but a year later was was dismissed for falling asleep on the job. No wonder - he was would have been 63 yrs of age.

In 1823 he was granted 20 acres of land at Drummond Tasmnaia, but the ownership was transfered to a Joseph Johnson of Green Ponds.

In 1824 John and Mary lose everything in a fire on their property - John was aged 86 and Mary 90. They are declared paupers and apply to the government for assistance.

A year later on 6th November 1826 Mary Cropper (nee Tuck) died aged 92 a 'Poor Woman'.

It is unknown as to when/where John Cropper died.
