About John Cook Dewey

John Cook Dewey was born May 19, 1831, in England to Thomas and Eliza Dewey. He arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley in the Moses Daley Company on September 28, 1853. He married Mary Allen April 23, 1854. She was the daughter of Jude and Mary Allen Nicholas Allen, and was born April 18, 1838, in Parma, Caugha, Ohio. John was christened on January 12, 1831, in Stroxton, Lincolnshire, England. He passed away October 8, 1895, in Deweyville, Box Elder County, Utah, USA, and his wife Mary passed away on August 23, 1911.

John married second: Harriet May on 11 Feb 1857 , Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Her parents were George and Hannah Hobson May. Harriett was born Juyl 1834, and died 18 Sept 1887, in Deweyville, Box Elder, Utah. John joined the church when he was 17 and was disowned by his parents. He left England in September of 1850 for America. He spent the winter in New Orleans and then went to St. Louis where he stayed until May 1853, when he was hired to drive a team across the plains.

Upon his arrival in the Valley, he settled in Bountiful . He helped guard the city when Johnston 's army came. He married twice in polygamy. He was musical and led the choir for nine years in Bountiful. In 1864 he moved his family to Empy Springs, later called Deweyville, Utah. He was a bishop, farmer, postmaster, school master, Justice of the Peace, and friend. He was a good father and husband. He was faithful in all his callings and was loved and respected by all. He died of stomach cancer and jaundice.
