About John Dickson

Accompanied parents to America; attended the public schools and finished; went into the coal business with his father Thomas. Their mines were at Oak Hill, Swissvale, Ireland Station (now Wildwood) on the Allegheny Valley Railroad.

In 1866-7, moved his family to Swissvale where he was a partner in Dickson, Stewart and Company, a successful coal mine and lime kiln operator. The firm had invested heavily in a Pittsburgh bank which failed after the Panic of 1873. Because of the double liability of stockholders (up to twice the amount of the investment), the business was ruined and he lost everything, including his house.

John shipped the 1st car of coal ever shipped to Pittsburg over the Pennsylvania Railroad.

He was a large property owner in Allegheny county.
