THIRD GENERATION

302. JOHN.

Son of 204 Henry and Hannah (Perry) .Born in Sandwich, Mass., 2 mO-21-1656 according to the Quaker records, but the town rec¬ ords give the date of birth of a John Dillingham as 24 February, 1658. As both dates were read from the original records this dis¬ crepancy cannot well be accounted for, except on the assumption that the first date belongs to a younger child whose death when an infant has not been recorded.

Very little has been found in the public records about this John. The reason for this is not known, unless it- be due to the fact that he was a Quaker. Although he was the elder son, his younger brother Edward was made executor of his father's estate, notwithstanding John was living in Sandwich at the time.
There have not yet been discovered the record of his marr¬ iage, his wif e 1 s name with certainty, the date of her death or the births of any of their children. This may be because the public records were -incomplete where the Quakers were concerned and the regular Orthodox church records did not mention them.

There is good reason, however, to believe that he married Lydia 3 Hatch, daughter of Jeremiah 2 (Thomas 1) and Mary (Kewes ) She was born 15 December, 1669. Lydia Dillingham is mentioned several times in the Sandwich Friends' meeting records of this period, and although that was the name of the wife (Lydia Chapman) of his cousin John 3 (John 2, Edward 1) of Harwich, it does not seem probable that she was the one referred to.

• 403. ill. Melatiah. Born about 1700; died 25 Jan., 1786 In Hanover.

• 405. v. (perhaps ,) Mary , who married William Gifford (born 16 Feb., 1699) of Falmouth, son of William.
• 406. vl. (probably Edward) Died 1783. It is possible that there were other children who have thus far eluded discovery.

7385. Lydia Hatch. Born on 5 Dec 1669 in Scituate, MA.52 At the age of 16, Lydia was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 22 Aug 1686.52

Lydia married John Dillingham, son of Henry Dillingham (13 Oct 1625-) & Hannah Perry (ca 1625-9 Aug 1673). Born 21 Feb 1655/6 in Sandwich, MA. John died in Sandwich, MA bef 2 May 1733. Occupation: Farmer. Religion: Quaker.

So far, there is no source that names Lydia's LNAB. I'm inclined to disconnect the Hatch profile.

A John Dillingham was born to Henry in 1658 in Barnstable, Massachusetts.[1] This may be our John or maybe not. His children were born 1702 to 1719.

John Dillingham married Lydia, probably about 1701. They had the following children:

• (IV) Meletiah, son of John Dillingham, was born 1699, died January 25, 1786, at Hanover, Massachusetts. He is mentioned in the settlement of his father's estate and lived in Sandwich until after his first marriage, but removed to Hanover before his first wife died. He was a large land owner, holding property in several adjoining towns. He married (first) in Scituate, Massachusetts, October 28, 1723, Mary Curtis, died December 17, 1727, aged twenty-four years. He married (second) in Hanover, February 18, 1730, Phebe Hatch, died January 20, 1732. He married (third) January 2, 1735, at Hanover, Maria Gifford, born October 16, 1709, died December 21, 1784.
