John Dismukes Sr. served with 3rd South Carolina Regiment, commanded by COL William Thompson. Continental Army during the American Revolution. His N.S.D.A.R. number is 548320. Qualifying Service: DAR #: A032366. SAR Patriot #: P-148463


Biography

John Dismukes was born in Halifax VA to William Dismukes in 1725; He died in 1818 in Baldwin Co. Georgia. He was married to Elizabeth Finney. His listed occupation was slave trader -cause of death pneumonia. He fought in Braddocks war against the Indians and French in 1755. He was also a Revolutionary War Soldier. He served with the 3rd South Carolina Regiment. He moved from VA to Warren County GA because he was allocated land in GA after the War. That same day he sold 200 acres to his son Ephram for $200; another 100 acres to his son John Jr. for $200; another 200 acres to his son for $200. He is listed in the 1890 census for Wilkes County. He was known by his fellow men as a honest, humane and patriotic man esteemed by all.

John Dismukes was married to Elizabeth Sarah Finney Marriage date unknown, and Elizabeth Finney married on Dec. 23, 1792 in Wilkes Co, GA.

It should be noted that there are two John Finney Dismukes noted. One is listed as the half brother of the other but both have the same wives. This is Wiki.

His 1818 obituary (which was printed in newspapers from Maine to Georgia) notes that he was respected by his acquaintances and of good character.

A veteran of the Braddock's War of 1755. A Revolutionary War veteran, having served with the 3rd South Carolina Regiment commanded by Colonel William Thompson.


FamilySearch documents John as the son of James Dismukes and Ruth Rowe. James was the son of Guillame des Meaux (1668-1737) and Sara Evnard (1683-?). James might be the brother of William, the father that geni.com documents.

Mistakenly, the name "Jessie" appears on the headstone. John was a native of Virginia who died in his 93rd year and who served in the French and Indian War, including Braddock's Defeat in 1755. He enlisted in the Revolution from South Carolina in 1777. His remains were transfered to Memory Hill from the Dismukes cemetery in northwestern Baldwin County.
