John lived on Crab Creek, and later diedthere in 1749 before his lands were confirmed. On May 17th 1749, Lydia Elswick, his widow, was recognized as theAdministrator of his estate, with surities Richard Ratliff and EbenezerWestcoat.Page 131.....May 17, 1749, Lydia Elswick's bond as Administratrix ofJohn Elswick, with surities Richard Ratliff and Ebenezer Westcoat. In 1767 Jacob Lorton purchased 656 acres, part of the 1,047 acres in Crab Creek which had been previously laid offor the Widow Elswick and Westcoat. The following year 1768, JacobLorton and his wife Lydia (presumably the widow Elswick, but imthinking the daughter) sold the Crab Creek land and appeared to havemoved to Meadow Creek. page 213 - 214.Crab Creek --- The little Valley drained by Crab Creek, probably sonamed for Joseph Crab, a journeyer in the region, offered someattraction to early settlers, chiefly on account of its location. It isa Wedge-shaped depression leading thru the Allegheny Ridge from thewaters of the Roanoke to the New River at the bend of the River abovethe crossing, which was to become Petter's Ferry. It is thought by somestudents of the early explorations that it was thru this depression thatthe New River was first approached. The topography was not inviting forsettlement, but along the upper branches of the creek, Colonel Patton, saw a prospect that included area enough for a survey for more than1,000 acres for which he recieved a grant. This he sold to EbenezerWestcoat and Lydia Ratliff. John Elswick had been there grazing horsesat the same time that George Draper was at the Meadows of Strouble'sCreek. Elswick died before a title for he land could be issued.Early Adventurers on the Western Waters By Mary B Kegley.Family Story: Surveyed for Mr John Elswick a certain track of waste andungranted land, situated in Augusta County, on the waters of Cacapehoneand bounded. Rachel Elswick to JohnKeplinger, 200 acres on Lost River, 1761....Henderson Elswick [1830-1888] The Elswick family has been in America since the 1600’s. The line can betraced to a John Elswick, Sr. – born in 1690 in Prince George County,Maryland. It is interesting to note that in 1750, John Elswick receiveda grant for 406 acres near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Over 100 years laterthe old Elswick farm would become the scene of the bloodiest single daybattle in American history – the Civil War Battle of Antietam. The line is then traced down three generations to John Elswick, III –who served with the Virginia Militia during the American Revolution. Infact, Henderson Elswick is descended from a long line of men who foughtfor their country in times of war – having at least twogreat-grandfathers, John Elswick and Pleasant Childers serving in theRevolutionary War. Pleasant Childers served in North CarolinaContinental Line. Henderson Elswick was the oldest of ten children born to John WesleyElswick and Winnie Rowe. He was born in Kentucky on October 5, 1830 andthe family moved to the mouth of Conaway Creek in the 1840’s after Johnreceived grants for several hundred acres in the area. On November 1, 1849, Henderson was married to Catherine Looney – thedaughter of John and Cynthia Stiltner Looney and herself the descendantof several Revolutionary War ancestors. On May 1, 1856, HendersonElswick received a land grant of 227 acres on the Levisa Fork and 60acres on Cabin Creek of Rock Lick. He shortly thereafter built his housethat is still standing at the entrance to this cemetery. In July of 1863 – John Wesley and Winnie Elswick watched their fouroldest sons ride off to enlist in Company F of the 10th KentuckyCavalry. The 10th Kentucky fought in many battles during the war andearned the nickname the “Yankee Chasers” for their bravery under fire. Henderson Elswick is a very special veteran for me. I grew up not 200yards from this spot and have known the Elswick family my entire life. There are family stories of Henderson being captured during the war.During his captivity he was guarded by Clell Thornbury who knewHenderson personally and allowed Henderson to escape. During this period it was almost as dangerous to be home on leave as itwas on the front lines. Families up and down the Levisa River sided witheither the Union or Confederate cause and Buchanan County became knownas Buchwacker’s Paradise. When I was growing up I made many trips to thesmall cave on the mountain where Henderson was said to have stayed whenhome on leave. Henderson and Catherine had a large family of twelve children. Lucy, John L., Joseph L., Jemima, Mary “Polly”, Thompson, Louise, Nancy,Lewis, Basil, Anderson and Landon M. Elswick. After the war, Henderson was involved in farming and the loggingbusiness. He and his sons would wait for the spring rains and then ridethe rafts of logs down the Levisa and Big Sandy Rivers to the saw millsin Cattletsburg, Kentucky on the Ohio River. It was on one of thesetrips, on June 1, 1888, when he died of a heart attack in Pike County atthe age of 57. Catherine applied for and received her widow’s pension of 25 dollars peryear in 1900. We are gathered here today to honor these two veterans of the AmericanCivil War. May they always be remembered and their final resting placenever be forgotten by the generations that follow us here today. Thankyou. Speech given by Ed Talbott, III Genealogist of the Lt. Col.
