Today I found a letter dated Oct 17, 1947 from my dad W F Ennis, Jr. to his sister Mandane Hobson (I have all of Aunt Mandane's family notes)
Mary Ann Ennis buried in Warren Co., Ky, --I have had her as wife of John Ennis, Sr but she may well be his sister.
quoted from letter
"While you are on the subject of graveyards, there is two graves of Ennis women near Massey's Mill that are extremely plain and easy to read. One is Mary Ann Ennis, a spinster. The other, Rachel Ennis, the wife of John Ennis. Where they fit in our category, ' God only knows.' Mr. Alex Smith, whose mind is wandering now and I cannot verify it, tells me that this Mary Ann Ennis, who was seventy-eightyears when she passed away, was an aunt of our grandfather, George Ennis. And that this John Ennis was a younger brother of George Ennis. This Mary Ann Ennis reared John Ennis and educated him in some Eastern school. Whatcollege, Mr. Alex didn't know. And after this wife died (Rachel Ennis), apparently this John Ennis moved away from this county for there is no record of him whatever since that date (this is correct as John Ennis moved to Lafayette Co, Mo about 1830). Mr. Alex's informant on this matter was his own uncle uncle, one of the Potters, who knew them all intimately. There is much more to this tale than can be written here. And sometime I will tell it to you as near as I can remember. I asked Mr. Alex to dictate it to some stenographer and have her copy it for me but he failed to do so. I have seen the tombstone of George Ennis. It has fallen down and Mr. A. C. Bettersworth who owns the place now, told me that I might have itand if I wasn't so superstitious I would bring it home. " letter from Leslie Ennis to his sister Mandane Hobson dated 1-11-1954
" If you remember when Mary Neel (Allcock descendant) brought you home, I told you about finding the grave of Rachel Ennis wife of John Ennis(spelled with an E) on the Drake and Matlock Road. This was what was on the stone
"Rachel Ennis Feb. 13, 1778 married to John Ennis Sept. 6 1797 Died Sept 5, 1822."
Also there was a footstone marked "M.A.E." no headstone
