(added by Marvin Loyd Welborn tinkwelborn@mac.com, 6th Great Grandson, 13Dec2021)
James Ennis 1735-78 Bio.
In 1738 James Ennis’ father, Sir John Ennis, came to America when he was forced to flee Ireland because he had killed an officer of the law. James, at the age of 3, traveled with his father as a stowaway. They settled in Augusta County, Virginia USA. James enlisted in the 9th Virginia Regiment of the American Revolutionary Army in February 1776. He was captured at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. He died as a British prisoner of war in the winter of 1778. He had eight children.
James went as a young boy of three to America with his father Sir John Ennis. Family tradition states that James fought in the Revolutionary War. He probably bought land on the Catawba River in Burke County, North Carolina and moved there with his family in early 1780. The following comes from "Affidavit of Willis Lyons Ennis dated 17 April 1937". [James Ennis was the one and only child and heir to all the Towns and Lands of Augha, Cashel, Momrach, Bananarow, Caldragh, Tullaghmore, Kmckullen, Gortnarne, Agapoloo, and Killacross, all situated in the Baron of Leitrim, and the County of Leitrim, Ireland].
