About John Henry Esmay
Parents: Francis and Nancy Esmay
John Esmay married Eva Beesley at Lyons, Iowa on Nov. 2, 1891. In 1900, the family moved to this community where Mr. Esmay filed on a homestead south of town on which land is located the big warm spring.
Up until his retirement a few years ago, he was engaged in the building construction business. In the early 1900's, the firm of Schmidt and Esmay built many of the present buildings in Casper and Douglas including the public libraries in both towns. He also designed and supervised the construction of several National Guard armories in the state and the National Guard Camp at Guernsey.
He was a long-time member of the National Guard and was chief musician for the 3rd Infantry band. At one time he was director of the Casper Municipal band and he directed the Douglas band for a number of years.
Surviving are two sons, Howard of Gillette, and Maj. Gen. R. L. Esmay of Cheyenne. Also, two grandsons, John C., who is a dental student at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and Rhodolph, Jr., of Cheyenne. Two sons, Ben and Wayne, preceded him in death. Wayne was a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp where he died in 1945.
