About John Farewell

  • John Farewell was baptised on the 14th February 1612/1613 at St Peter & St Paul, Bishops Hull, Somerset, the son of Sir George Farewell and his wife Mary Seymour.
  • John Farewell was of the Inner Temple, London and married Dorothy Routh. As can be seen from her memorial inscriptions and their wills, the couple had only two children-Henry who died in infancy and John [who died without issue]. They did not have descendants who settled in America, despite many claims to the contrary.

In the name of God Amen I John Farewell of the Inner Temple London Esquire Doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner following Imp: I give all my lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever or which any other person or persons have in trust for me or to my wife to my deare wife and her heires in Trust and to the intent that she receives one hundred and fifty pounds per annum during her life as also fifty pounds more per annum during her widdowhood And as to the rest and residue that it be in trust for the benefit of my childe I now have and such child or children as I shall have to be apportioned and devided either as to the estate or by imitary? thereof in such manner as my said wife shall direct and appoint. NEVERTHELESS for my child or or children to be apportioned or devided in manner as aforesaid And this will I suddenly make in my usual estate of health knowing by what a slender thread we hold our life And I would not willingly faile in the principall part of my will though I hope to have time both to enlarge my meaning to this and to make additions as to other matters. In witness whereof I have sett my hand and seale this last day of June 1661. John Farewell. Signed sealed and published in the presence of Nich. Batteler John Farewell junr Sweetheart Jn case your children dye have a special care of Jack whome I have bredd and whome I would have to have a considerable share with yourself.
