John, according to Cushing’s MS., ‘came from Cambridge, in Old England,’ with Matthew Hawke and w. ‘and settled in New Hingham 1638.’ (It is on record that a John Fearing arrived in Hing. with others in 1665. See History of Hingham, by Solomon Lincoln, pp. 43,44). He had land granted him in 1635, 1647, etc., and after his decease other lots in the six divisions fell to his heirs, which were drawn in his name. He was a man of prominence in our early local history, and held various positions of trust and responsibility. Freeman 1652. Selectman 1648, 1661, and 1663; also deacon of the church for many yrs. ... Resided on North Stl, nearly opp. the meeting-house of the Universalist Society. [1]

Biography

John Fearing, son of John Fearing[1]and his wife Sarah was christened on January 24, 1612/1613 in Suffolk, England.[2]

In 1638, John Fearing came from Cambridge, England as the servant of Mathew Hawk and his wife. They embarked at London on the ship Diligent of Ipswich, arriving in New England on August 10, 1638.[3]He settled in Hingham in Massachusetts Bay where he was one of the first settlers[4][5]and had land granted to him.[6]

He became the "Clerk of the Writs" which position he held for at least twenty years.[7]He held various positions of trust and responsibility. Freeman 1652. Selectman 1648, 1661, and 1663 ; also deacon of the church for many years.[6]

In about 1641 John Fearing married a woman named Margrett (Margret). Her maiden name is unknown.[1]In 1675, following the death of her husband, Margret married (2nd) Robert Williams of Roxbury.[6]

"John Fearing Clerk of the Writs deceased on the 14 day of May 1665. "This quote is from the records of Daniell Cushing Sr. who was chosen by the town of Hingham to the position of Clerk of the Writs following the death of John Fearing.[6]

In his will, dated three days prior to his death, and proved 12 June following, names wife, two sons, and two daughters ; the oldest son to have a double portion. Inventory appraised at £331 04s. 00d. included two oxen, five cows, two cattle three yrs. old, one yearling bull, one old mare, one mare three years old, one horse four years old, one yearling colt, four goats, six swine, four "pigges," dwelling-house, to which had "recently" been added a new end, much land, farming-tools, etc. " Farmer." Resided on North St., nearly opposite the meeting-house of the Universalist Society.[6][1][8]

Israell bapized at Hingham Sept. 1644; m. July 22, 1673 to Elizabeth Wilder, daughter of Edwrd and Elizabeth (Eames) Wilder. Died Hingham Jan 27, 1730/31 at 78 years old. died at Dorchester in 1693. Married Elizabeth Wilder. 4 children.[9]
Mary baptized April 18, 1647. m. December 15, 1665 James Hersey[9]
Sarah baptized July 29, 1649. m. Feb. 6, 1666/7 Benjamin Lincoln.[9]
