Biography

Nothing is known about Margaret's early years. Her surname, parents and other family members are all unknown. Her first child was born about 1642[1]and the average age women married during this time was about 20; so her year of birth can be estimated at about 1617 - 1620. Since she appeared in New England during the great migration era, it can be reasonably assumed that she was born in England and migrated to New England from there.

Margaret married John Fearing about 1640 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony (based on the estimated year her first child was born.) Margaret and John raised four children; her husband was a prominent man and held various positions of trust and respondibility. He became a freeman in 1652. [1]

John Fearing became sick and died on May 14, 1665.[1][2]

John Fearing made his will at Hingham, three days prior to his death, probably May 11, 1665. Margaret's legacy was the lower and upper rooms of the new end of their dwelling house, the bed which was standing in the parlour with all the bedding, curtains, furniture, and Margaret's own clothing. She also received L 30 from John's estate, wherever she pleased; one half of the orchard, two cows. The children were directed to pay their mother, Margaret, "eighteen pence upon the pound" yearly, "according to what portion of my estate each child possesseth, the sd pay to be paid unto their Mother, shall bee two thirds in wheate & Barley, & one third in Indyan Corne." John Fearing, their older son received the other part of the dwelling house. Children mentioned in his will were John Fearing, Israell Fearing, Mary Fearing, and Sarah Fearing.[3]

Margaret/Margery (surname unknown), widow of John Fearing, married Robert Wlliams on November 3, 1675.[4]Williams was 68 years of age at the time of their marriage.[5]

Her 2nd husband, Robert Williams, made his will on November 26, 1685; it was probated September 29, 1693.[5]Margaret was not named, but the will referred to their marriage covenant.[6]Specifically the first "Imprimis" says, "I will the true and faithful performance of the covenant between myself and my well beloved wife, in full and specie according to the time mentioned and said covenant, and that my three sons, Samuel, Isaac and Stephen shall pay the same by equal proportions."[5]This indicates that aparently Robert and Margaret made a marriage covenant so that in the event of Robert's death, Margaret would be provided for, financially speaking.

Margaret Fearing Williams died at Roxbury on December 22, 1690,[5]before her 2nd husband, Robert Williams who died November 26, 1693.

Children:[1]

Israel was baptized September 1644 at Hingham. m. Elizabeth Wilder, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Eames) Wilder on July 22, 1673. He died at Dorchester in January 1693, 48 years old. He was a cooper by trade.
Mary was baptized April 18, 1647, married December 15, 1665 to James Hersey
Sarah was baptized July 29, 1649, married February 6, 1766/7 to Benjamin Lincoln.
Research Notes

Her surname was NOT "Story" or "Robinson." Some people say these two were her surname based on "Notes and Queries" at American Ancestors. Both of these women, however, were living after Margaret (Unknown) Fearing had died.[7]
without citation, some people believe her last name at birth was Strong, or less likely, Hawke.
