About John Fergusson of Craigdarroch
JOHN FERGUSSON OF CRAIGDARROCH
Fake Genealogy
At least two vanity pedigrees published on the internet claim that John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, was born on 27 April 1597, at Edinburgh in Midlothian, Scotland. See FamilySearch and Ancestry This is wrong. A man named Robert Fergusone did have a son named John whose baptism was registered at Edinburgh on 27 April 1597, but he was a baker there. He was not the Laird of Cardarroch .The baptism of this child reads as follows: "Robert Fergusone baxter A. S. N. Johne w. Johne Halliday advocat and Johne Watsone of Gorgie". [NRS: OPR.685/1/1] Image of Baptismal Record
It follows, therefore, that John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, is not the same person as John Fergusone
The Question of Identity
James Fergusson and Robert Menzies Fergusson, joint editors of the Fergusson Records, believed that John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, was the eldest son and heir of Robert Fergusson of Craigdarroch and his wife Lady Katherine Cunningham However, this proposition is not supported by the surviving record evidence, which shows that Thomas Fergusson was actually the eldest son of this marriage. NRS: GD77/99 It follows, therefore, that John Fergusson, here treated, is unlikely to be the same person as John Fergusson
As noticed above, John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, is the son of Robert Fergusson of Craigdarroch NRS: GD77/99 However, the name of his mother has not been satisfactorily identified.
John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, is the grandson and heir of John Fergusson, 8th Laird of Craigdarroch from whom he inherited various lands in the barony of Glencairn and sheriffdom of Dumfries. NRS: GD77/100
Death
John Fergusson of Craigdarroch, here treated, died before 18 March 1621. NRS: GD77/103
