John came to the New World in 1630 aboard the Mary & John. He settled first at Watertown, MA, and acquired land totaling 40 acres. With others of Watertown, he was one of the founders of Dedham, MA, where he was a selectman in 1654.

John Gay was one of a body of "spirited and determined men and women"who in February 1630, attended a meeting of the Puritans in the New Hospital, Plymouth, England, with the purpose of emigrating to the New World. This company was principally from the counties of Devon, Dorset,and Somerset. They selected Governor John Warren and the Rev. John Maverick as their pastors. On March 30, 1630, they embarked in the 400-ton ship "Mary and John" with a Capt. Squeb (Squeeb). The number of the company was 140. After seventy days' sail they entered the harbour of Nantucket (Pomeroy Records).

John Gay settled first at Waterton, Beaver Brook Plowlands, owning altogether forty acres. He was one of the founders of the Plantation at Dedham, MA., his name appearing on the petition for incorporation September 6, 1636, and among the original proprietors of lands. He was one of the Selectmen 1654. He died March 4, 1691. His wife Joanna died August 14, 1691. His will in the Suffolk records, dated December 18, 1686 was proved December 17, 1689, his wife Joanna and son John being executors. His estate was valued at L91 5s9d.

The Old Village Cemetery is the oldest in Dedham. It is a very small Cemetery and the graves are unmarked. Ref; John Gay of Dedham, Mass. by Fredrick L.
