According to some records, John Calvert was born at Kiplin, in Yorkshire. George Calvert was also born here (find more info) and in the 1620s he built a "hunting" lodge near his birthplace. There is also a ruined Carthusian monastery on the land: Mount Grace Priory, established in 1398 (dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady and St. Nicholas) until1539, when it was "dissolved." Throughout the Reformation and after, the chapel was frequently used as an underground parish. (see brief history on this blog:myheartwasrestless.blogspot.com/2009/06/mount-grace-priory-and-lady-chapel.html ). The chapel is now used for Mass (!!!) and is run by the Benedictines.
There is in existence (find proof...) a will dated 1566 and signed by a John Calvert (possibly from Flanders, France. He mentions three sons: Leonard, John, William. Possibly the same person? What about son Robert?
The dissolution of the monasteries occurred in 1539, when John would have been about 14 years old. The monastery near Kiplin (Mount Grace Priory) was destroyed around that time.
