John served in the Revolutionary War . He enlisted in the Harrison County, VA militia sometime after he moved there from MD in 1773. In Judge John Goodwin's book "The Goodwin Families in America" he writes "He served in Captain William Lothar's Company 1778-1780 and Captain Joseph Gregory's Company until 1782."

John was living in Harrison Co. in 1833 when he applied for and received a war pensionamounting to $80 a year. Also listed among Va. (WV) pensioners was Edward Goodwin II & Francis Goodwin who may have been his brothers. John vouched for each on their pension applications.

John was one of the first Magistrates in Harrison Co. having been appointed in 1784 by Patrick Henry. He was a land owner owning a large farm between the mouth of West Fork River and Simpson's Creek near what is now Fairmont. He may have owned other properties in the area as there are copies of 2 deeds belonging to John Goodwin signed by Patrick Henry.

Cemetery notes and/or description: It is located on a private farm (no longer in the Goodwin family) on Oral Lake Rd / Co Route 17. It was also known as the Goodwin Morris Cemetery

The Pension Office records show that John Goodwin was born in 1762 in Montgomery county, Md., and enlisted from Harrison county, Va., in 1778, aged sixteen. He is said to have had a younger brother Edward, who lived in Harrison county; and it is also asserted that Zadock Goodwin, who married Mary Winters, was not a son of this John. These facts indicate that several brothers, some very young, were living in Harrison county in 1778, and presumably their parents had come with them from Mont- gomery county, Md. They seem not to have been related to the John and Joseph, Appendix C.
