The Greenleaf family were originally Huguenots, who left France on account of religious persecutions and settled in England some time in the sixteenth century.
John Greenleaf resided in Newbury until his death. He was admitted to the First Congregational Church in Newbury, with his first wife, Elizabeth Hills, on 31 Jan. 1696. He was buried near the north corner of the "Oldtown"meetinghouse. The house of worship occupying that site in 1854, probably covers the grave. He is sometimes referred to as Quartermaster John.
