John Halstead was the son of Oliver Halstead 1509 – 1582 and Ann Barcroft 1513 – 1593. His known siblings were: Nathaniel Halstead 1533; Lawrence Halstead 1542 – 1630; Henry Halstead 1544 – 1611; Ellen Halstead 1546; George Halstead 1547 and Anne Halstead 1549 – 1581.

John Halstead married Mary Sellers about 1553, probably at the St Peter's Parish Church, Burnley, Lancashire, England.
