American Revolutionary War:
- Revolutionary War Military Service: According to his pension records, John enlisted from Frederick County, Virginia near the beginning of the revolution and served 3 years as a private in the companies of Capts. Landson, Yancy and Terrel in the Virginia Regiment under Col. Edmonds.
- Later, while living in Culpeper County, Virginia, he enlisted a 2nd time and served as a private in Capt. White's Virginia Company under Cols. Thorn and Southall.
- He was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse and the seige of Yorktown & surrender of Lord Cornwallis after which he was discharged. [Length of 2nd service not listed in record.] Charles Brown and Barnabas Sisk were witnesses to his service. [2948] [2949]

- Revolutionary War Pension Application: John filed application #S16404 in October 1832 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. 2948 John's pension was approved 6 Feb 1833 for $80 per annum effective 4 Mar 1831 and ending 4 Mar 1833. He was paid $160.00. He was 72 years old at the time of his application in 1832.
- 1830 United States Federal Census, William Hankins household, Livingston County, Kentucky: William's household consisted of 2 m 5-10, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 40-50 [William], 1 f 5-10, 2 f 10-15, 1 f 30-40.
- The only children for William that are verified are Joel & Elizabeth so they are the only ones listed. Other possible children were: Louisa, Sarah, Nancy, John, Daniel, Polly Ann & William H.
