Biography
Massachusetts state seal
John Hatch was a Massachusettsan.
John Hatch was born on February 16th, 1689/90 in Falmouth, Massachusetts to Benjamin and Alice (Eddy) Hatch. [1] [2] On December 13th, 1715 John published his "purpose to marry" with Mariah Fish in their hometown of Falmouth, where they were wed on January 30th, 1715/6. [3] John and Mariah had five children in Falmouth before moving to Tolland, Connecticut in 1723. They later farmed 100 acres on the Willimantic River in the adjoining towns of Willington and Mansfield, where their last three children were born between 1726 and 1729. [2]
John died in 1738 in Mansfield, and his estate was administered by his brother, Timothy, of Tolland. John's debts exceeded his "movable estate" by £224, 1s., 9d. [2]
Research Notes
Lineage - In addition to the Hatch genealogy which places John as the son of Benjamin and Alice (Eddy) Hatch, there was only one John Hatch born in Falmouth in the 17th century, that being the son of Benjamin.
Earmark - John's earmark was recorded in the Falmouth town records on 02 February 1720/21 and was described as a "happeney," or half--penny, on the fore lid of the right hear and a hole in the left ear.[4] A half-penny earmark is simply a half-circle that is half the size of a penny.
Property - John purchased land in Tolland, Connecticut in 1722, a year before leaving Falmouth.[2]
