Biography

Mariah/Meriar Fish was born on 31 July 1690, in Falmouth, Barnstable, (then) Province of Massachusetts Bay, the daughter of Nathan and Deborah (Barrows) Fish.[1][2][3]

She married John Hatch, son of Benjamin and Alice (Eddy) Hatch, on 30 June 1716 in Falmouth.[4]

She passed away about 1738.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Not found in Barbour records.
The Hatch genealogy has her birth as July 31, 1690, but this conflicts with that of her brother Ebenezer. The Fish genealogy has July 16, 16--.
On the family's record in the original Falmouth town records "Meriar" was recorded between Nathan and Ebenezer, the last two digits of her birth year are written over. It appears from this record that Mariah and Ebenezer may have been twins, as the record is difficult to read. The record may say "16th" or "last" day of July.
With a strong, old New England accent "Mariah" would have been pronounced locally as "Mer-EYE-yer", and thus the spelling on her birth record.
