My Lord,

Parliament having granted a Sum of Money for the purpose of assisting Persons unable to get Employ in this country to remove to the Cape:_ I take the liberty most humbly to solicit your Lordship, to grant such assistance as to your Lordship may seem requisite for myself and Family's Voyage to the Colony now establishing by His Majesty's Government.

I have been regularly brought up to the Provision of the Law _ but thro having losses and the Ill Conduct of my late Partner am now destitute of all resource. Situations at this time are so scarce, that it is almost considered a favour to employ Persons:_ and altho' I have made every Application, both through the medium of the Daily Papers, and private Channels, yet such applications have hitherto remained unanswered, and my Family in consequence in great distress.

I am well aware, My Lord, that when the Grant was made by Parliament it more particularly alluded to Mechanics, and Workmen. But surely, My Lord, it is not thereby intended to exclude those who have been unfortunately brought up to the more liberal Professions; and with this impression upon my Mind, I confidently ask for the assistance of His Majesty's Ministers, and most sincerely hope, that your Lordship will excuse my present application which nothing but my perplexed Situation would ever have induced me to make

John Henry was the son of Henry Heath, an employee of the East India Company. He was born in 1793 in West Sumatra, near the factory of Bencoolen. Fort Marlborough, the military headquarters was in Bencoolen, nowadays Benkulu and was later part of the Dutch East Indies and is now part of Indonesia. Henry Heath was a writer and a senior merchant, making his fortune in the "Honourable East India Company" as it was known. The Company was responsible for opening India to trade and placing it firmly in the British Empire. The Government of the time gave the Company carte blanche in ruling India and many men sought employment as it is was a way to make a fortune: if one managed to survive the tropical illnesses and the skirmishes between the various factions; natives; and other European countries also seeking to conquer India. Henry Heath was such a one, retiring Northfleet where he owned Orme House, becoming a pillar of the community and among the gentry of Kent. He was active in St Botolph church, being on the vestry, involved in the running of the workhouse, and various other community activities - to the extent that he is mentioned in a website on Gravesham [Northfleet and Gravesend].

Whilst we know that John Henry Heath was born in Sumatra, it is not known whether he had private tutors or whether he was sent back to school. His father Henry Heath, a contemporary of Raffles - who founded Singapore - was the British Resident of Kroee [Krui] and well able to do either. As John Henry was educated in the law it is probably that he retunred to attend a school such as Eton, Rugby, Winchester or similar Public school.

Henry Heath died 28th August 1843 as there it is mentioned in the Gentleman's Magazine. "At Northfleet, age 74, Henry Heath, esquire, of the East India Company " [as civil servant]. From which one can deduce that he was born about 1769. John Henry HEATH John Henry was born in 1793 or 1794 in West Sumatra. Fort Marlborough at Bencoolen [now Benkulu] was the centre of the East India company for the pepper factory. John Henry was born during the period that his father was employed as a monthly writer and senior merchant. Bencoolen came under the Bengal part of the East India Company and this leads to confusion as to whether he was born in India or in Sumatra, the records being in the "India Office"/ It is not known where John Henry had his schooling, it being quite likely that he was sent back to England to do his schooling. He trained in law and became a notary public. He had difficulties when a partner apparently was dishonest and he ended up in debt. He applied to go to South Africa as part of the assisted scheme and when he arrived he soon returned back to his profession of law. In 1820 he was in Cuylerville on the Mankanzana River and by May 1821 he had a canteen in the Upper Kaffir Drift;. There were quarrels within the Bailey party and there was a problem when he ended up sheltering the daughter of another settler. By 1825 he was in Port Francis, now Port Alfred, being a public notary and Government clerk. He then moved to Grahamstown still working as a notary public. In 1835 he made an unsuccessful attempt to be appointed a Magistrate. An allowance of 100 pounds per year ceased from 1835. In 1842 his daughters went to the grandfather [Henry] in Northfleet and the 2 eldest married that year. On the 4th February John Henry died near Grahamstown [cause of death was apoplexy] leaving an estate of under 150 pounds. John Henry Heath was married to Maria : Iveson in her death notice and in South Africa genealogy Evertsen. As yet this is an area of research. Maria and John Henry had 9 children b1 John Henry (1818-1889] b2 Maria Cecilia [c1820 - ] married Cyrus DANIELS a paymaster with 55th Regiment [home from China on sick leave] in 1842 in Northfleet b3 Caroline Amelia [c1822, Cowie - 1901, Hastings] married Samuel GOULD surgeon [1805 - 1884, Cuckfield] in 1842 in Northfleet. Their son Leumas GOULD emigrated to Toronto, Canada. b4 Elizabeth Rosina [c1824, Cowie - 1898 Derby] married Henry William HARMAN [c 1815 - 1875, Manchester but buried in St Botolph churchyard, Northfleet] in Northfleet in 1852. He was an engineer. b5 Matthew George Thomas [c 1826 - ?] b6 Sarah Emily HEATH [c 1828 - 21 August 1879, Port Elizabeth] married Charles JOHNSON 4th January 1851 in Adelaide Methodist Church. Charles was a mason but I am not sure when he died. Sarah Emily HEATH then married Philip Wathen COURT on 24th December 18589 in Port Elizabeth, a witness was Fanny HEATHCOTE. They had a daughter Fanny Heath

He married Helena VAN DER LINDE on 29th May 1854 but they divorced in 1856 Note Helena VAN DER LINDE married Wiilliam Thomas FRASER [died 1852, Free State] on 23rd March 1857 in the Free State. She then married Hendrik Ambrosius VAN DER HERDE [died before 1902]. Helena died in 1902. b9 Mary Angelina [c 1834 -died 1901 Croydon] married Charles BATESMAN in 1862 in Northfleet.

Dear Ray and Jennifer I am not entirely sure if Ellne THOMPSON was born in South Africa or whether John Henry married here in England. He became a doctor and worked in the Tarka district. My Oupa's younger sister remembers her grandfather as a doctor and his death notice confirms this. As many went to England to train then it is possible that he married while in ENgland. He would have been in his early 20s when he married. He married a Catharine OOSTHUISEN in 1842. There was one child from the 1st marriage. Ellan Magdalena HEATH married a BACKHOUSE. So I will probably have to leave that one as it is not in my direct line. It is possible that they met in England. His grandfather Henry HEATH lived in Northfleet and all John Henry's sister except for Sarah Emily married in Northfleet. Thanks for your offer though.. Sarah Ann

Dear Marielle I am related to John Henry HEATH. Henry HEATH was an East India employee, he was a writer, a senior merchant and resident [of Croee] in West Sumatra. He was rich when he retired to Kent, he was mentioned in Pigot's pages, as gentry, living in Orme House, Northfleet. His son John Henry HEATH became a solicitor and was one of the 1820 settlers. John Henry HEATH born 1793/1794 died in 1845 in Grahamstown. He had 9 children. So far I have traced some of the eldest son John Henry's descendents. John Henry [1818-1889] became a doctor and practised in the Tarka district. He married 3 times, my grandfather is grandchild to him and his 3rd wife, Judith Gertruijda Magdalena SMAL. The only daughter of John He Snry HEATH (1793-1845) that married in Albany was Sarah Emily [born 1828], she married Charles JOHNSON, then later it appears that she and Walter Wathen COURT had a daughter Fanny in 1860, and then they married. Cecilia Maria HEATH married Cyrus DANIELL in 1842 and Caroline Amelia married Samuel GOULD later in 1842 both in North Aylesford. While Elizabeth Rosina married Henry William HARMAN [sometimes HEARMAN] in 1852. Mary Angelina married either Charles BATEMAN or Alfred BENFIELD in 1862 again in Northfleet. I found a Mary Angelina BATEMAN died in Croydon in 1901 aged 65. Thomas Bailie HEATH died without issue. I have quite a few names for the next John Henry, with information about quite a few of his descendents. Ellen Magdalena, the only child from the 1st marriage married Phil BACKHOUSE. John Henry son of John henry and Caroline or Catherine OOSTHUYSEN had quite a few children, I have some of that line thanks to Izak HEATH. Then the third marriage was to Judick SMAL and the second child was my great-grandfather Hendrik Johannes HEATH who was a ganger on the railways around the Cradock area. He married twice and I was happy to hear from the descendents of my grandfather's half brothers, he is from the second marriage. Hendrik Johannes married Anna Maria FREEZE and then when she died Hester Johanna DELPORT. When he died in 1920, my grandfather was 10 and placed in an orphanage. Hester remarried a Joseph POTGIETER as she was a young widow. They had children, one of whom, Petrus was killed in a farming accident, he was shot, in 1933 [Greenbushes near Port Elizabeth]. I just remember Ouma POTGIETER who died in the 1960s in Port Elizabeth. I am still trying to research more on the HEATH connection and see if there was a relationship between the other HEATH who came out in 1820.
