John Hepburn, here treated, is styled brother to Mr. George Hepburne, Dean of Dunkeld, in a charter dated January 1506-7. He founded St. Leonard's College in the University of St. Andrews in 1512, and about eight years later built a fine wall with turrets at proper distances round great part of the city upon his own charges. He was tutor to Patrick, third Earl of Bothwell, his great-grand-nephew, on 16 February 1516-17. The Scots Peerage II: 147
