FRANCES ANDERSON, daughter of Reynard Anderson and Elizabeth Skiffen, was born between 1663 and 1670 in Charles City County, Virginia, just northeast of current Petersburg, and died 1726 in Prince George County, Virginia. She married (1) JOHN HERBERT before 1687.[4] He was born 1659 in London, England, and died 16 March 1703/04 at “Puddledock,” Charles City County.

Children of John and Frances (Anderson) HERBERT:

  • i. MARTHA HERBERT, b. 1688 in Charles City Co., Virginia; m. JAMES POWELL COCKE. He was the son of Thomas Cocke and Thomas’s first wife, Mary Brasseur. Martha and James Powell were step siblings—with her mother married to his father.
  • ii. ANN HERBERT, b. between 1690 and 1700; dead by 1725.
  • iii. BULLER HERBERT, b. between 1690 and 1700 in Charles City County; d. after Nov. 1730 in Prince George Co., Virginia; m. MARY STITH.
  • iv. RICHARD HERBERT, b. between 1690 and 1700 in Charles City Co.; d. 1731 in Henrico County, Virginia; m. PHOEBE ROBERTSON.

John Herbert's tombstone was, under the direction of relatives, removed from Puddledock, in Prince George Co., VA, and placed in Blandford churchyard. The Virginia Gazette for August 7, 1752, has an advertisement inquiring for "the descendants of Mr. John Herbert, late merchant on James River, who formerly m. Miss Frances Anderson of said place, and died in the year 1704 or 1705, and what arms he bore is said to be cut on his tombstone. He left two sons, Butler and Richard, and one daughter, Martha, who m. Mr. James Powell Cocke about the year 1718." [Virginia Vital Records, Old Blanford Tombstones, p. 36]

Buller and Richard and prob. John were the sons of John herbert of Prince George Co., and Frances Anderson his wife. He d. March 17, 1704 in his 46th year. According to his tombstone, which was lately taken from the family residence, "Puddledock" in Dinwiddie county (formerly part of Prince George) to Blandford churchyard in Petersburg, John Herbert was son of John Herbert, apothecary of London, and grandson of Richard Herbert, citizen and grocer of London. It has always been the claim of the family that these Herberts were descended from the family of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, which claim is supported by the arms and crest engraved upon the tombstone being the same as those borne by Sir Richard Herbert of Colbrook, youngest brother of William, first Earl of Pembroke. (Slaughter's Bristol Parich; William and Mary Quarterly, V., pp. 230, 240) It is very probable that Richard, the grandfather of the Virginia emigrant was son of William Herbert and Katherine Morgan.
