GEDCOM Note

From Charlene 12/14/2005 email:
Jerusha's father, John Humphries, called "Virginia John" Humphries in Wake Co. NC was a prominent man in that county. He was county surveyor for over 25 years, a very important position in those frontier counties. He also served as a Justice of the Peace and was probably the John Humphries who served in the NC legislature from Wake County during the Revolutionary War. About 1805, Virginia John moved to Dickson Co. TN. He left his will there in 1827 recorded in Book A of the Dickson Co. will books.

Here is what he said about Jerusha's family in the will:
"Item; I give and bequeath to my Daughter Jerusha Brown One Dollar and twenty five cents. Likewise I give and bequeath my two grandsons John Humphreys Brown and Asa Madison Brown my Daughter Jenisa [sic] Brown's children a Negro woman named Sabra and her increase from [thoifa] of [ ] 1823 it being the time [ ] [ ] Asa A. Brown did feloniously steal take and carry her away from me to be equally divided between them but they are not to take possession of this negro woman or increase until the death of their mother and then they are to take possession to be to them and their assigns"

The will also states that Jerusha had previously received a feather bed from him "on her first marriage." Apparently leaving a feather bed to your kid was a big deal then.

The boys' gift from their grandfather didn't do them much good! Didn't Jerusha live until the 1880s? Long after the slaves were freed. But apparently John was resentful that Asa took Sabra away with him. He had choice words for another son-in-law as well.

"Virginia John", as he has been called in old records, was in Dickson County,TN in the late 1790's per county court records. He begins to show up in 1803 as a court appointed surveyor to settle land disputes. This John was my great grandfather 4-times removed. The part of Dickson County he lived in was in the northwest corner of the old county but, when the state formed the current Houston County, his land was included in the new Houston Co. Thanks, Michael F. Humphreys Dickson, TN

John "Virginia John" Humphreys/Humphries (John 2, John 1) Died 1827 in Dickson County, TN. He married Susanna Reynolds. He lived in Meckleburg Co. VA. (which was originally part of Brunswick Co., VA; then became Lunenburg Co. before being included in Meckleburg Co.); then in the early 1770's, moved to Wake Co. NC where he served as a surveyor for about 25 years and where most of the records there call him "Virginia John", but also as Colonel John Humphries: John Humphries, Esq.; and moved to Humphries Co. TN in 1805.

John Humphries served in the Revolutionary War in Orange Co. NC 1780-81 with Captain Wood and Colonel Malmedy. DAR Ancestor # A034660. It is likely he who served in the North Carolina Legislature during the Revolution.
