Occupation: Farmer
Religion: Presbyterian The progenitors of the Irvines in Victoria, British Columbia, were John & Jessie (nee Goar) Irvine. John's home was at Calf Sound, on the Isle of Eday, in Orkney County, Scotland, and Jessie was from Cross and Burness Parish on the Isle of Sanday. John was born December 27, 1827, and Jessie's birthdate was March 6, 1821. Both their families had lived in Orkney for over one-hundred years by the time they were born. The Orkney Islands lie just six miles off the northern coast of Scotland. This group of approximately seventy small islands are on latitude 59 degrees North; the same latitude as Skagway, Alaska, andChurchill, Manitoba, in northern Canada. The island group, of which about 20 are inhabited, covers an area of 56 miles north to south, and 29 miles from east to west. Orkney is an ancient land, to be sure; some of the farms have been inhabited and tilled from immemorable and some have existed for over a thousand years. Others, it is believed, may be as old as 4000years. The cold seas and strong winds would make this place barely habitable were it not for the rich soil built up since the end of the last ice-age. One of Orkney's greatest treasures today is itspast. Those interested in archeology, sea-birds, geology, exploring, history (Nordic), or just enjoying clean, fresh air, could not find a more stimulating destination than the Orkney Islands. In late October of 1850, John and Jessie and five-year-old Robert, steamed from Stromness, Mainland, Orkney Islands, to London where, November 10, they boarded the sailing barque, Tory and sailed around the Horn of South America, to Fort Victoria, New Caledonia. The Tory's crew and passengers were at sea for nearly six-months. It was an arduous journey, but so were the conditions awaiting them in their new surroundings as servants in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company.
