John Holmes

John "Jack" Francis Holmes, 80, of Pawleys Island, died Tuesday, April 27, 2008.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church with the Rev. Andrew Morgan officiating. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, will follow at 3 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols, S.C.

Mr. Holmes was born in Long Island, N.Y. As a youth, he was a member of Church of the Advent Episcopal Church in Westbury, N.Y., participating as an altar boy and choir member. In 1946, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged with a letter of commendation from President Harry S. Truman. Mr. Holmes began his educational career as a history and English instructor, and then later he became a high school guidance counselor for the State of New York. He married Winnie Lee Mincey in 1964. They moved to Georgetown in 1998.

He was predeceased by his wife.
