John Albon “Jack” Yowell, 97, born April 12, 1918, in Peola Mills, Madison County, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, in Fredericksburg. He was a resident of Greenfield Senior Living, Spotsylvania County.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Albon Waverly and Elizabeth Hale Yowell; his wife, Mary Mitchell Yowell; his brothers, Robert, Everett, Joel Byrd and Mayo; and sisters Mary Frances Rosson and Peggy Eure. He is survived by sister Betty Jane Hall of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Betty Lynn Graves Yowell and Barbara Longaker Yowell, both of Madison; his children, Robert Yowell of Florida, Phil Yowell of Spotsylvania, and Emily Braswell of Tennessee, and their spouses, Tina, Ginny and Richard; grandchildren John, Mitchell, Keith and Katie and their spouses, Kara, Rebekah, Suzanne and Matthew; three great- grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Jack served in the Pacific Theater during World War II in Battery C 902nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He was an agriculture teacher in the Fauquier County School system for 33 years and was faculty sponsor for the Future Farmers of America (FFA). While teaching he met his wife of 68 years, who also taught for many years in Fauquier, lastly at Remington Elementary. Jack was an avid vegetable gardener, especially known for pickle making. He was a longtime member of the Bealeton-Remington Ruritan Club and Bealeton Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton. An informal gathering of family and friends will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday Feb. 29, in Culpeper National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fauquier High School Future Farmers of America (FFA), 705 Waterloo Road, Warrenton, VA 20186.
