Biography

John James was born before August 23, 1648 as he was witness to a deed dated August 23, 1669 and would have to of been at least 21 years of age.

John James and Lydia Turner were married before January 1676/7, when their son John was born.[1] John was born, say 1646 possibly in England. He was living on 26 February 1677/8, when "Lydia James, wife of John James," acknowledged a deed at Scituate,[2] but had died at Scituate probably shortly before 5 March 1678/9 when his widow signed an administration bond with her father.[3]

There has been much written regarding the death of John due to a mortal wound received during King Philip's War when Scituate was attacked by Indians resulting in his death six weeks later on May 20, 1676. Whether this event is partially true or a total fabrication will never be known but John did not die on that date. He was alive in February 1677/8 when he and wife Lydia acknowledged a deed (Plymouth Colony Deeds, IV:170).

John died after February 26, 1677/8 but before March 5, 1678/9 when Lydia and John Turner, Sr., were bonded as administrators of the estate of John James. His inventory was taken on 22 October 1679 and recorded at Plymouth.[4]
